Bellefonte Beats Visiting Bisons 52-40

BELLEFONTE – With the Clearfield High School boys basketball team putting together a strong second period against Bellefonte Wednesday night it appeared it could be a game where the Bisons would pick up it’s third win of the year.

The Red Raiders would have none of it though as they went on a 15-0 run early in the third period after the Bisons had taken a 21-20 lead on a three point field goal by Jack Mellgard just ten seconds into the second half.

Clearfield would never recover from that 15-0 run and would go on to be beaten 52-40.

Clearfield started out slow once again against the now 6-5 Red Raiders as senior Zach Moerschbacher dumped in eight first quarter points to pace Bellefonte to a 10 point lead after one, 16-6.

To the credit of Clearfield they played one of their finest periods of the 2010-11 season in the second quarter when they outscored Bellefonte 12-4 to trail by only two at the half, 20-18.

The Bisons got a three pointer each from Christian Lezzer and Mellgard to fuel the comeback in the second frame as Lezzer, off of the bench, would lead his squad in scoring on the night with 11 points. Six came in the fourth period for the freshman.

As mentioned earlier, Clearfield’s Mellgard hit a three pointer at the start of the second half to give the Bisons their only lead, 21-20, before the Red Raiders pulled away thanks to six third quarter points by the 6’ 4” Moerschbacher.

Bellefonte stretched the lead to 15, 38-23, after the first three periods were in the books by outscoring the guests from Clearfield 18-5.

The Bisons however didn’t go down without a fight as they came back in the fourth stanza, winning the final eight minutes 17-12.

Mellgard and Robbie Myers helped out Lezzer and the Clearfield offense with nine points each as Clearfield fell to 2-8 on the season.

Bellefonte had Moerschbacher leading the way with 16 points followed by Robbie Proper with 11 and John Kowalchuk tossing in nine.

The Red Raiders also won the junior varsity contest with a 47-39 victory over the young Bisons.

Clearfield will be at home on Friday might when Lewistown comes calling. The JV game starts at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
