Lady Tide Fall to Johnsonburg 73-49

JOHNSONBURG – If the Curwensville high school girls basketball squad had played the first half like they played the second half on Tuesday night in Johnsonburg this story would be about a victory for the Lady Tide. Unfortunately, it is not.

The Johnsonburg Ramettes utilized a strong offensive first half coupled with a cold Lady Tide first 16 minutes to beat their visitors 73-49 in an Allegheny Mountain League contest on the Ramettes home hardwood.

Johnsonburg (5-5) spotted the Lady Tide a quick 2-0 lead on a field goal by Katrina Seaburn of Curwensville. Then in a flash the Ramettes went on a 14-0 run before the Tide’s Taylor Bumbarger would hit a three pointer to stop the Johnsonburg onslaught.

Bumbarger did her best to keep the Lady Tide (2-6) in the contest by scoring eight first quarter points including two treys. On the night the Tide senior paced her team with 14 points.

After one quarter it was Johnsonburg up by 13 points, leading the Tide 23-10, prompting Curwensville head coach Rusty McCracken to comment afterwards, “For whatever reason we just didn’t come ready to play tonight. We let some things shake us up at the start of the game that didn’t help matters.”

The second quarter wasn’t any better as Johnsonburg outscored the Tide 20-7 to take a very large and commanding lead into the lockers, 43-17.

McCracken talked about halftime and the Lady Tide turnaround, “We couldn’t put the ball in the basket in the first half so I challenged the girls at halftime to turn it around and score.”

Curwensville would score 32 points over the final two quarters and actually outscored the Ramettes 32-30 in the second half, making McCracken somewhat happier, “I was happy to see the girls put the ball in the basket on a more consistent level in the second half and scoring 32 points was a good thing to see. Hopefully, it will carry forward.”

Johnsonburg had no one score off of the bench but all five starters did their part, and did it well as Justis Myers lead all scores with 24 points. She scored 11 in the third quarter alone.

Sophomore point guard Rhianon Fowler followed with 15, Kiana Myers had 14, Dani Dwyer 12 and Taylor Harvey chipped in with eight.

Helping Bumbarger and the Lady Tide offense was Courtney Bachelier with 11.

The two teams combined for 46 free throws in the foul laden game with the Ramettes hitting on 14 of 26 while the Lady Tide were 9 of 20 from the charity line. In all, 36 fouls were called in the 32 minutes of action.

In the junior varsity game it was all Johnsonburg coming away with a 50-6 win to open up the activities on the evening.

The Lady Tide will play Thursday night when they travel to Bucktail. JV action starts at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
