Golden Tide Wins Three of Five Matches at Coudy Duals

COUDERSPORT – A trio of wrestlers were undefeated and five others had winning records as the Curwensville Area High School mat team won three of five matches at the Coudersport Duals Saturday.

The Golden Tide defeated Lackawanna Trail 62-18, Coudersport 48-31 and Sheffield 51-24 and lost to Lewisburg 53-17 and Penns Valley 43-42.

Coach Duane Wriglesworth deemed it a good outing for the Golden Tide, now 4-4.

“Our goal was to go 4-1, and we came within one point of achieving that,” he said.

It was all falls or forfeits in the Penns Valley match, each team registering seven wins for a stalemate that was settled by the scholastic tie-breaker system. Criteria H gave the nod to the Rams for earning the most first points in bouts that were contested.

Though aided by forfeits, the Golden Tide won the majority of the bouts in the three victories.

“We were pretty happy with everybody’s performance,” Wriglesworth said.

Junior 135-pounder Jake Keller, who handed Punxsutawney’s all-time winner Kody Young his first home-mat loss Thursday, remained undefeated with four falls, including a pair of 37-second quickies, and a decision. He’s 12-0.

Senior Greg Koptchak also engineered four pins, three coming in the first period, and received one forfeit at 119.

“He had a really good half series and was really skillful at getting several falls,” Wriglesworth said. “I was really happy for him. He needed that.”

Freshman 112-pounder Tyler Mays also was 5-0 with two pins and a major decision.

Junior Alex Holt started the day with one win and finished with a 5-4 record by notching a pin, two major decisions and a forfeit at 130.

Senior Kyle Kyler (189), sophomores Aaron Kline (103), Nathan Wriglesworth (140) and Hunter McCracken (152) and freshman Trey McKenzie (125) all were 3-2. Though his wins were forfeits, newcomer Kline assures the Golden Tide of having a bantam the rest of the season.

Junior Jason Baker (160) picked up his first victory with a fall against Lackawanna Trail, while sophomore Austin Pollick (145) received two forfeits for his first wins.

Curwensville’s next match will be against District 9 Class AA rival Redbank Valley Thursday at New Bethlehem.
