Tyrone Takes Care of Bisons 65-39

HYDE – A short handed Clearfield boys basketball team fell to visiting Tyrone Tuesday night 65-39 to remain winless thus far on the year. The Bisons now stand at 0-4 while the Golden Eagles moved to 2-3 for the season.

Clearfield was without senior point guard Jack Mellgard who did not dress due to an illness.

The Bisons did come out at the start very aggressive and confident as they went ahead 4-2 early in the first eight minutes only to watch Tyrone go on a 7-0 run to lead 9-4 with just over a minute left in the opening frame.

Two three pointers by senior Andrew Redden in the last minute of play helped the Bisons take a 12-11 lead into the second quarter.

On the night Redden had five treys and finished with 17 points to pace the Clearfield offense.

Clearfield head coach Forrest Campman liked the start of the game, “I thought we put a good first quarter together with energy and hustle. We had a nice comeback there to end the quarter and that was good to see.”

Not to be outdone, however, the Eagles went on another run to start the second stanza. Tyrone scored 10 unanswered points until Clearfield ended their drought at the 3:40 mark on another three pointer by Redden.

Clearfield could only manage six second quarter points while Tyrone started to put their offense in another gear as they put up 18 of their own to build a halftime margin of 29-18.

Campman then noted some problems “We had 14 turnovers in the first half and everyone knows you are not going to win with that many turnovers.”

Experience is also an issue with the Bison mentor, “We basically right now are putting five kids out there that are what I call varsity players. You can’t expect younger, inexperienced guys to go out there and be as effective. They all need time to grow.”

Things didn’t to go much better for Clearfield in the third quarter as Tyrone scored 19 points to just seven for Clearfield as Eagle junior guard Richard Crabtree started to warm up with two three-pointers.

Crabtree finished with a game high 25 points as he knocked down a total of six three’s and scored 10 of his 25 in the fourth quarter as Tyrone continued to build it’s margin of victory.

Helping out in the balanced scoring attack by the five starters for the Golden Eagles were Jared Templeton with 10, Charles Adams with eight, while Steve Franco and Richard Stever each scored seven.

Robbie Myers helped out Redden for Clearfield as the junior put in 15. Myers and Redden combined for 32 of the 39 Clearfield points.

In closing Campman spoke of the very near future, “It is still a long season and after the first of the year we will find out if we can be competitive the remainder of the season. These kids aren’t going to quit and neither will I. We’ll just keep working hard and see where that takes us.”

In junior varsity action the Tyrone youngsters easily handled the Bisons by a score of 44-19.

Clearfield will next play in the Purchase Line Lions Club Holiday Tournament on Monday night at 6 p.m. in a semifinal game with Somerset.
