Lady Chucks Upend Clearfield 57-48 With 11 Three-Pointers

PUNXSUTAWNEY – When your opponent knocks down 11 three pointers you would expect them to come out on top in the final score. That’s exactly what the Punxsutawney girls basketball team did to the visiting Clearfield Lady Bison squad on Monday night, winning their first game of the year 57-48.
It was Lady Chuck senior Jenna Reitz who started out somewhat cold before finding the range from beyond the arc as the 5’ 3” guard banged in seven treys. Reitz ended the game leading all scores with 23 points after making only one of many attempts from three point land in the first quarter. The daughter of Punxsutawney head coach Randy Reitz had two three’s in each of the last three quarters.

Clearfield head coach Joey Castagnolo talked about the effort by Reitz, “We made a lot of crucial turnovers which led to them scoring as Jenna (Reitz) just was simply on fire.”

The Lady Bisons lead after one quarter was in the book 10-7 and extended their margin to 16-7 mid way through the second quarter before Punxsutawney started to find the basket.

The Lady Chucks ended the first half on a 12-4 run to cut the Clearfield lead to 20-19 at the break.

With the lead changing hands several times in the second 16 minutes the Lady Chucks finally put Clearfield away in the late stages of the fourth quarter.

Punxsutawney won the third quarter 22-18 and the final eight minutes 16-10 to keep the Lady Bisons winless at 0-3 on the year. The Chucks are now 1-4.

Helping Reitz with the scoring for the Lady Chucks was Shawnna Crago who had 12 points and Paris Kernich hitting for eight.

Clearfield was led by sophomore Dakota Farmery who had 17 on the night with 13 coming in the second half. Breanna Peters, another sophomore, helped the Bison cause with 11.

Castagnolo talked about a game that slipped away, “We certainly could have won this game tonight but we just need to find a way to win.”

In the junior varsity contest it was the Lady Chucks picking up the win 35-23. Brittany Renaud was the high scorer for Clearfield with 10 points.

The Lady Bisons return to the court on Wednesday night when they travel to Tyrone with the junior varsity game starting at 6 p.m. and the varsity contest to immediately follow.
