Glendale Stops Curwensville Lady Tide In Season Opener 56-37

FLINTON – The 2010-11 girls high school basketball season tipped off with a Moshannon Valley League (MVL) game Friday night as Curwensville visited Glendale. And it was the Lady Vikings controlling the game from the start in capturing the 56-37 victory over the Lady Tide.

Glendale started their successful night by opening up an 18-9 first quarter lead as the first eight minutes was filled with numerous turnovers by the Tide and many fouls by the Vikings.

The sloppy, erratic play by both squads continued into the second quarter but Glendale still managed to extend their lead and go into halftime with a 33-15 bulge.

Curwensville coach Rusty McCracken spoke afterwards about his teams turnovers and cold shooting, “We sometimes just come out and play very tentative. We need more confidence in our ball handling and of course our shooting.”

The Lady Tide did improve in the second sixteen minutes as they were only outscored by their hosts 23-22. The marked improvement over the first two quarters was in part due to the play of senior Taylor Bumbarger who poured in ten of her team high 12 in the second half.

McCracken was pleased with the effort even though the game was out of hand at times, “I always hope that we never quit and I was pleased to see us still playing hard near the end of the game.” Finally the Tide coached talked once again about shooting, “I thought we worked very hard to get our shots. We just have to make more when the opportunity is there.”

The Lady Vikings, who hit on 21 of 29 free throws, were led by Kelli McGarvey with 17 and Morgan Biddle with 16. Biddle was also eight for eight from the charity stripe.

Savannah Strickland and Rebecca Johnson helped out Bumbarger with six each in the losing effort.

In junior varsity action the Lady Vikings made it a clean sweep by beating the Curwensville youngsters 35-14.

The Lady Tide return to action on Tuesday when they host the Lady Rovers of Brockway with the JV game tipping off at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
