First Thursday State College Celebrates the Arts

First Thursday State College will celebrate the arts on Nov. 4, with a variety of exhibits, performances, demonstrations and activities. Parking is free that evening at all municipal street meters, the parking lots on Fraser Street and on Beaver Avenue and Allen Street (across from Municipal Building), and the McAllister parking deck. Sidewalk posters will mark most participating venues. All events are open to the public and admission to First Thursday events is free.

Christian Science Reading Room and Bookstore:
5:30-7:30 p.m. “Spiritual Solutions to Problems — Explore the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” to find spiritual solutions to life’s challenges. Readings feature others who have had healings of allergies, cancer, migraines, lack of housing or money, etc, giving them freedom in life — 218 South Allen Street.

HUB-Robeson Galleries:
Exhibits:
8 a.m.-8 p.m.: “Textural Rhythms: Quilting the Jazz Tradition/Contemporary African American Quilts” This exhibition unites the two most popular artistic forms of African American culture — jazz and quilts. — Robeson Gallery.

8 a.m.-8 p.m.: “Uncommon Bond” — Artists Donna Curanzy-Seltzer, Mary B. Hochendoner, Beverlee Lehr, Mary Lundeen and Jo Margolis share a similar energy and commitment while employing different mediums and styles. — HUB Gallery.

Palmer Museum
7 p.m.: “Road Work,” the Anderson Lecture Series, features Craig McPherson, an artist represented in “At the Heart of Progress,” who has spent much of his career painting and drawing on, at the side of, above, and even under the road. McPherson will take the listener to a the sidewalks of Harlem, the Golden Horn of Istanbul, the steel mills of Pittsburgh, the Venice harbor, the Hong Kong Peak, and to the new water tunnel far below the city of New York. He will talk about his work as a draftsman, mezzotint engraver, painter and muralist over the last forty years.—Curtin Road

“Honoring Recently Promoted and Tenured Penn State Faculty,” an exhibit of faculty book selections, including a personal narrative about the significance of each — The Diversity Studies Room, 109 Pattee Library, Curtin Road.

“Penn State Clubs: Then and Now,” an exhibit of images from the Penn State University Archives — the main exhibit hall of Pattee Library, Curtin Road

8 a.m.-5 p.m.:
“Back in the Day: Student Traditions at Penn State,” an exhibit from Penn State University Archives — The Special Collections Library, 104 Paterno Library, Curtin Road.

Schlow Centre Region Library
7-8 p.m.: Presentation by Jeffrey Wert, noted Civil War scholar and author of eight books, most recently, “The Cavalry of the Lost Cause and Lincoln’s Sword”– 211 South Allen Street.
