BEHIND STRENGTH OF STATE RECORD, BROCKWAY’S BUGANZA IS THE RRR ROADHOUSE D9SPORTS.COM FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR WEEK SEVEN 2010

15 Players named to RRR Roadhouse District 9 Honor Roll

SHIPPENVILLE – District 9 Pennsylvania High School football records aren’t usually words that end up in the same sentence very often.

That’s why Brockway’s Derek Buganza is the Week Seven RRR Roadhouse D9Sports.com Football Player of the Week after setting the Pennsylvania career passing record in a 35-14 win over Elk County Catholic Saturday night.

Buganza had a solid night going 21 of 29 passing for 268 yards and a touchdown while also running for 19 yards. His final pass of the night to Chris Marshall gave him 8,549 career passing yards passing the previous record of 8,545 set just last year by Lancaster Catholic’s Kyle Smith, who is now at Central Michigan. Buganza’s passing also helped the Rovers win a battle of unbeatens for the second week in a row, as they scored 21 unanswered second-half points to break a 14-all deadlock and get the victory on the road. The Brockway senior now owns the single-game, single-season and career passing yard marks in Pennsylvania.

Mike Vervoort, Buganza’s Brockway teammate, also had a big night with five touchdowns – four rushing, one receiving – as did Smethport’s Ryan Wells – 274 yards rushing, 5 touchdowns, helped create a safety. But the weekend belonged to the state record and to Buganza.

Vervoort and Wells are honored on the RRR Roadhouse D9Sports.com Honor Roll where they are joined by 13 additional players who had outstanding games over the weekend.
