Moore, Fields, Heindl, Shannon, and Luzier Win at Hummingbird Speedway. Brooks, Kot, Anderson, Shannon, and Luzier Claim Point Championships

With beautiful weather for a change, Hummingbird Speedway held a five-division program on Saturday evening for the final night of points being awarded. With double points on the line, champions in each division, as well as positions in the top ten, would be determined. Features were won by Eric Moore of Frenchville (Limited Late Model), Fuzzy Fields of Brockport (Street Stock), Matt Heindl of St. Marys (subbing for Alan Barnett in the Four Cylinder class), Kyle Shannon of Brockway (Pure Stock), and Aaron Luzier of Clearfield (Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinder). Point champs for the 2010 season are Dwayne Brooks of Falls Creek in the Limited Late Models, Joe Kot of DuBois in the Street Stocks, Mike Anderson of DuBois in the Four Cylinders, Shannon in the Pure Stocks, and Luzier in the Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders.

The Four Cylinder class was the first feature to hit the track, led by Heindl and Randy Albert on the front row. Heindl led the first lap, until a pileup in turn one involving Devin Lewis, Eric Lucas, Aaron Henry, and George Bailey. All drivers were okay, but Henry’s car suffered serious damage and was done for the evening. Heindl got a good restart and maintained the lead as Anderson and Adam Nixon got by Albert. Heindl stretched out his lead as Anderson and Nixon battled for second. At the halfway point it was Heindl, Nixon, Anderson, Tim Bailey, and Albert. Nixon began to close on Heindl with five laps remaining and it was shaping up to be a good battle to the finish. But during a lap eleven caution, Nixon headed to the pits. Heindl again pulled away on the restart and took the win, followed by Anderson, Tim Bailey, Devin Lewis, and Albert. Anderson claimed his second straight points championship.

Next up were the Street Stocks. What seemed to be shaping up to be a “down to the wire”, nail-biter of a finish for the point championship didn’t turn out that way. Clearfield’s Gary Little held a slim two-point margin over DuBois’ Joe Kot entering the evening’s competition. But engine troubles on Little’s car relegated him to an uncharacteristically poor finish and meant Kot would be the 2010 champ.

The Street Stock feature began with Jim “Animal” Bloom of Curwensville on the pole. To his outside was Bob Ralston Jr. of Philipsburg. Bloom led lap one, but a caution slowed the pace and put Fuzzy Fields to his outside on the double-file restart. Bloom tried to hold Fields off  but was unable to do so. Several other minor cautions lined them up side-by-side again, but Fields was able to use the high line to get past Bloom. By lap eight Jamie Price had worked his way into second. There was a multi-car pileup on lap eight and Bloom was involved, got tagged by another car and rolled. He was okay, but done for the evening. Fields continued to hold the lead, and halfway through the race he was still being chased by Price, Kot, Craig Bainey, and Paul Blake. With five laps to go, Kot worked his way under Price to take second and began to close on Fields. But he ran out of time and Fields went on to win his second  feature of the year at Hummingbird. Kot was second, Price third, Brandon Connor fourth, and Bainey fifth.

The crowd was anxious to see how another close points battle would turn out as the Limited Late Models took to the track for their feature event. Less than ten points separated Dwayne Brooks and Eric Moore. Moore started on the pole, with Cody Schultz beside him. Brooks started fourth. Moore took the early lead and began putting some distance on those racing behind him in the early stages as Schultz and Luke Hoffner battled for second. But Schultz was able to maintain second and began to reel in Moore. By lap seven he had caught him and worked his way around the outside of Moore to take the lead. A caution on lap nine bunched the field back up for a restart, but Schultz continued to lead, and at the halfway point it was Schultz, Moore, Hoffner, Chris Farrell, and Brooks. During another caution on lap fifteen, Hoffner’s night was ended as he headed to the pits with mechanical problems. Moore got back by Schultz on lap seventeen. A caution on that lap kept things close again at the front. Schultz and Brooks battled side-by-side for second, and Brooks took the spot two laps later. Moore held on for the win, but by virtue of his second place finish, Brooks claimed the title by two points over Moore. Rounding out the top five behind them in the feature were Farrell, Schultz, and John Reed.

Dave Kohler and Mike Miller made up the front row of the Pure Stock feature. Kohler led lap one, but Kyle Shannon got around him to take the top spot on lap two. He began to stretch out his lead as Jeremy Buck moved into second. Shannon and Buck continued to run one and two at as the crossed flags were shown indicating the halfway point. They were followed by Mike Calhoun, Kohler, and Ryan Hess. Buck worked his way around the outside of Shannon to take the lead on lap ten, and the pace was slowed for a lap eleven caution. After the restart, Buck and Shannon ran side-by-side, and Shannon wrestled the lead away from Buck on lap thirteen and pulled away to capture his fifth win of the season. Buck was second, followed by Calhoun, Steve Arthurs, and Ryan Hess. Point leader Matt Heindl finished ninth, and as a result of his win, Shannon passed both Heindl and Ryan Hess in the standings to claim the points title.

Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinder action rounded out the evening’s program, with Bryan Warren and Aaron Luzier bringing the field to the green. The top spot changed often in the early going as Luzier led lap one, Shawn Fedder led lap two, and it was Ben Smith out front for lap three. With half of the laps complete, Smith continued to lead with Luzier, Fedder, Brad Myers, and Stephanie Lucas behind him. A caution on lap nine slowed the pace, and Smith, who has seemed to be plagued with bad luck late in many events this season, was bitten again as he was sent to the pits with a flat tire. Luzier inherited the lead again and never looked back as he went on to capture his fourth win of the season and take his second straight points championship. Following him across the line were Myers, Shawn Fedder, Lucas, and Walt Fedder.

Although the points season is over, Hummingbird Speedway continues to race on Saturday nights. This coming week will see a five-division program being run, with the top ten in points being honored and features lined up by the point standings. Trophies will be presented in memory of Eric McGarvey. Racing continues again on September 11th. Starting time for these two events will remain at 7:00PM. Then on September 18th the speedway will present its annual “Mick Orsich Memorial Late Model Open” (with a 6:00PM start time). All classes will be competing, but the special late model event will pay $2000 to win as the regular steel-block competitors will be joined by aluminum block super late models. The night is also a fund-raiser for the Hahne Cancer Center in DuBois, and a “Chinese Auction” will be held at the track. To close out the season, the “Chili 100” will again be run on October 9th. This event features a 100 lap feature for the late models and 50 laps for the Street Stocks. Front-Wheel Drives and Pure Stocks are also on the card.
