Barnett, Kot, Hoffner, Shannon, and Fedder Celebrate Independence Day with Wins at Hummingbird Speedway

Submitted by Hummingbird Speedway

Beautiful weather greeted race teams on Independence Day weekend, and they responded by treating the fans in attendance to great racing action. Picking up wins were Alan Barnett of Philipsburg in the Four Cylinders, Joe Kot of DuBois in the Street Stocks, Luke Hoffner of Turbotville in the Limited Late Models, Kyle Shannon of Brockway in the Pure Stocks, and Shawn Fedder of Clearfield in the Front-Wheel Drive Four-Cylinders.

The first feature to hit the track was the Four Cylinder class. Alan Barnett was subbing in teammate Mike Anderson’s car and Matt Heindl piloted Barnett’s car. Barnett started alongside Randy Albert on the front row. Barnett took the early lead and began to pull away. At the halfway point Barnett had a sizeable lead, followed by Albert, Devin Lewis, Heindl, and Tim Bailey. A caution on lap nine bunched the field back up, but Barnett again powered into the lead and pulled away, hanging on to win his third feature of the year. Following Barnett across the line were Albert, Lewis, Heindl, and Mark Hummel. Ironically, the win will move Anderson will past Barnett for the points lead. Kyle Parson and Barnett won the heats.

Chad Rougeux and Joe Kot led the field of Street Stocks to the green flag. And once the green flag waved, it was nonstop to the finish as the race ran caution free. Kot took the early lead and never looked back. Rougeux and Dan Smeal battled for second, and halfway through the race it was Kot, Rougeux, Smeal, Jim Bloom, and Dan Dimmick (subbing for Jamie Price). Once Smeal got past Rougeux he tried to close the gap on Kot, but he couldn’t do so and Kot cruised to his third win of the year. Rougeux experienced mechanical difficulties and pulled off. Following Kot and Smeal at the finish were Bloom, Brandon Connor, and Gary Little. Bloom and Smeal were heat race winners.

Next to hit the track were the Limited Late Models. Cody Schultz was slated to start on the front row, but he was unable to make the call which moved John Chesnalavich up to the pole position with Brian Molnar on his outside. Chesnalavich grabbed the early lead, as John Reed and Luke Hoffner battled for second. Following a lap two caution as Paul Kot slowed and came to a stop in turn one, Chesnalavich, Hoffner, Eric Moore, and Reed were all running close on the restart. Moore got under Chesnalavich for the lead on a lap four restart, and began to pull away. Halway though and it was Moore, Chesnalavich, Hoffner, Reed, and Dwayne Brooks, who had moved up from his thirteenth starting spot. There were several more minor cautions, and Hoffner moved to the high line and passed Moore for the lead on lap sixteen. He began to stretch out his lead as Moore and Brooks battled for second and Reed and Chesnalavich battled for fourth. Several late race cautions gave Brooks a chance at Hoffner, but “The Turbotville Tornado” held him off for his second win of the season. After Hoffner and Brooks, it was Moore, Rich Womeldorf, and Chesnalavich. Heat winners were Bob McMIllen and Hoffner.

Pure Stock action was next, with Dave Kohler and Steven Arthurs setting the pace. Arthurs led lap one and began to stretch out his lead as Kohler, Matt Heindl, and Mike Calhoun battled for second. At the halfway point, Arthurs led over Heindl, Kyle Shannon, Jeremy Buck, and Kohler. Arthurs hung on through restarts following several cautions, and Shannon had worked his way into second place. Shannon passed Arthurs for the lead on lap thirteen, and went on to capture his second straight win. Rounding out the top five were Heindl, Buck, and Ryan Hess. Calhoun and Heindl copped the heats.

The final feature event of the evening was the Front-Wheel Drive Four Cylinders. John Campisano and Shawn Fedder led a field of seventeen to the green. Fedder led early, with Campisano and Jacob Kline staying with him as the top three pulled away from the rest of the field. They continued to run that way at the halfway mark, followed by Aaron Luzier and Mike Lucas (subbing for Walt Fedder). Fedder was strong and pulled away with two laps to go and went on to win his second feature of the year. Second through fifth went to Campisano, Luzier, Kline, and Lucas. The three heat race wins went to Dustin Kemp, Fedder, and Campisano.

Racing will continue next week, with a “Kids’ Banner Night” contest also taking place. Young race fans are urged to make banners of their favorite driver. They will be displayed at intermission and the crowd will select winners. For more information, visit the track’s website at www.hummingbirdspeedway.com
