Clearfield Little League 9-10 All-stars Rally to Edge Curwensville 13-12 in Elimination Game

CLEARFIELD – In a game with more ups and downs than a roller coaster, the Clearfield Little League 9-and-10 All-Stars averted defeat, and elimination from the District 5 Northern Tier Tournament, with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and then came from behind again in the seventh to nip Curwensville 13-12 on McNamee Field Wednesday evening.

Clearfield jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two frames, but Curwensville battled back with 10 unanswered runs in the next three innings and tacked on another in the sixth for an 11-9 advantage.

However, a two-out miscue gave the hosts two runs and new life.

Curwensville went ahead again in the extra inning when Blake Passarelli singled to right center to drive in Avery Francisco, who had reached base on an error.

Because of the 75-pitch limit, reliever Josh Terry had to be pulled after walking Mike Ternoway leading off the lower seventh.

Jeremy Learish drew a free pass from Francisco, and Jon Gates dropped down a sacrifice bunt.

With Clearfield down to its final out following a strikeout, courtesy runner Ethan McGinnis broke for home on a pitch in the dirt and was ruled out on the tag, then safe when the ball rolled free.

One batter later, Learish raced to the plate with the winning run as Wyatt Porter beat out a slow grounder to short.

Ternoway, the fourth Clearfield pitcher, picked up the victory after giving up just three hits and two runs, one unearned, in 2-2/3 innings.

Starter Noah Rumsky also was effective in his three-inning stint, surrendering only one hit and one unearned run while striking out seven before departing because of the Pitch-Count Rule.

Matt Collins’ two-run triple in the first and Rumsky’s two-run double in the fifth were key hits for Clearfield. Collins and Porter had two safeties apiece.

Curwensville, which bowed out at 1-2, got a single, double and four RBIs from Francisco, a single, double and 3 RBIs from Bryce Timko and a single and triple from Terry.

Clearfield (2-1) will return to McNamee Field Friday for the elimination bracket semifinal against Milesburg (2-1) at 6 p.m.

In other Wednesday action, Milesburg ousted Mountain Top 9-8 while Four-Leaf Clover (2-0) nudged Philipsburg-Osceola (2-1) 10-8 in the winner’s bracket final.
