Chiefs Down Brookville 13-2, Win Fourth in Row

HYDE – The Clearfield Chiefs stretched their winning streak to four and padded their Jefferson County Legion League record to 6-1 with a 13-2 rout of Brookville Tuesday evening at the Bison Sports Complex.

Chad Zurat scattered seven hits for his second win, striking out 11 and walking three. Both of Brookville’s runs were unearned.

Corey Bookhamer and Justin Hoffman led Clearfield at the plate with two hits and three runs batted in apiece.

Andrew Redden had a pair of run-scoring singles, while Kyle Timchak collected three hits and Zurat chipped in two singles.

The visitors took a short-lived lead in the first when Dustin Dombrowski walked, advanced on Zane Hackett’s single into the left field corner and Jared Heschke’s groundout and scored on a passed ball.

The Chiefs answered with RBI-singles by Bookhamer and Hoffman after Timchak looped a single to left and Redden walked.

Clearfield converted three walks by loser Tyler Dombrowski into runs in the second. Bookhamer’s liner to center plated Shane Harper and Hoffman’s double to left center, the game’s lone extra base hit, chased home Jarrett Fulmer and Redden.

Kyler Kephart’s infield single touched off a four-run rally against reliever Anthony Black in the third. Timchak and Redden singled for RBIs while two runs scored on Brookville errors.

Pat Brush went to the mound for Brookville in the fourth but departed after giving up a single by Zurat and four consecutive free passes, the RBIs credited to Harper and Fulmer. Redden and Bookhamer single home the final runs with Nathan Bonfardine on the hill.

Bonfardine set down eight of the last nine batters he faced, not only preventing the Chiefs from getting another run for a Mercy Rule win but also forcing Zurat to work seven innings.

Clearfield, 7-1 overall, hosts Punxsutawney Wednesday and DuBois Friday in important JCL early-season showdowns before traveling to Marion Center Saturday for another inter-league double-header. The Chiefs will play the Indiana County League’s Young Township at 3 p.m. and Marion Center at 6.
