PHILIPSBURG – Corey Bookhamer pitched a six-hitter and the Clearfield Chiefs took advantage of walks and errors to spoil Philipsburg’s opener 13-2 in American Legion non-league action at the Don Womer Baseball Complex Saturday afternoon.
Three of the four Phils pitchers issued a combined eight free passes, and the Chiefs turned all of them into runs.
Five Philipsburg misplays made all but two of the Clearfield runs unearned.
Manager Sid Lansberry’s Chiefs managed only five hits, with a trio of extra base blows producing seven runs.
A two-run double by Bookhamer gave Clearfield a 5-0 cushion in the third inning after three walks, an error and Troy Danver’s sacrifice fly added up to three runs in the second.
Then, the Chiefs put it away in the sixth with an eight-run outburst highlighted by Steve Miller’s two-run double and Andrew Redden’s three-run homer, his second in as many games.
Bookhamer struck out 13 and walked three en route to his second win, losing a shutout in the fifth on consecutive two-out hits by Todd Reese, Gavin Luzier and Dylan Corl. Reese walked with two outs and scored on an error in the seventh.
Clearfield’s Sunday home opener was postponed because Punxsutawney players are involved in the District 9 Class AAA Playoffs.
The Chiefs will return to Jefferson County League action Tuesday at Brookville and will go to DuBois Thursday.
Their first home appearance will be Saturday when they welcome State College to the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Field for a nine-inning non-league game at 2 p.m.
