Reynoldsville, Pa (May 15, 2010) A cool, clear evening greeted fans and race teams at the Hummingbird Speedway for a 5 division show, after last week’s rainout. Despite the cool temperatures, the racing action, as well as a few tempers heated up on the track. Picking up their first feature wins of the season at the Speedway were Dwayne Brooks in the Limited Late Models, Fuzzy Fields in the Street Stocks, Todd English in the Pure Stocks, Aaron Henry in the 4 Cylinders and Dustin Kemp in the Front Wheel Drives. The pits were full and a good crowd was on hand for the second show of the season. After the heat races were completed it was time to go feature racing.
The Rear Wheel Drive 4 Cylinders were up first with Mike Anderson and Paul Metz Jr. leading the field to the green flag. Anderson jumped out to the early lead while Aaron Henry, who was piloting his dad’s #68 this evening made his way around Metz for second. Henry hounded Anderson for a few laps before gaining the top position as the two raced through turns one and two. Last week’s feature winner Adam Nixon, started scratch on the field but was quickly working his way through the pack and was in the top five after only a handful of laps. A quick caution allowed the field a chance to regroup, as Henry had opened up a sizeable lead. On the restart, Henry again darted into lead with Anderson, Metz and Alan Barnett putting on a spirited battle for the second position. It wasn’t long before the sparks would fly as George Bailey and Randy Coombs would get together on the front stretch with both receiving heavy damage. Just before the caution, Nixon had made his way into third and looked to be the only threat to Henry’s dominance of the event; however, Nixon would retire to the pits during the caution. The rest of the feature was all Aaron Henry, as he cruised to his first win of the season. The battle for second was a good one as Anderson, Metz and Barnett traded the position several times with Anderson taking the spot at the finish. The top 5 at the line were Henry, Anderson, Metz Jr., Barnett, and Tim Bailey. The twin heat races were won by Paul Metz Jr. and Adam Nixon.
The 20 car field of Street Stocks was up next with Chad Rougeux and Fuzzy Fields leading the way. Rougeux took the initial lead and led the first lap before losing the handle in turn two, bringing out the first yellow in the caution filled event. Fields inherited the lead with Jim Bloom on his outside for the restart. Before Bloom could make a bid for the lead, the #137 of Jamie Price snuck under him in turn one and began to set his sights on Fields. Several multi car incidents slowed the event and Fields was able to turn away all challenges from Price on the restarts. All the cautions shuffled the field several times and by the halfway point several drivers had made their way from the rear to occupy a spot in the top five. Gary Little, Bob Rosman, and Dan Smeal were battling back and forth for the third position as Fields continued to put distance between himself and Price. As the checkered flag waved, it was Fields picking up his second win of the weekend with Price, Little, Smeal and Rosman rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Chad Rougeux, Fuzzy Fields and Gary Little.
A full field of Limited Late Models made their way track side, led by “Big” Rich Womeldorf and Denny Fenton. On the initial start, Fenton attempted to power his way around Womeldorf for the lead in turn one, but looped it in turn two and found himself facing the wrong direction in front of the entire field. Womeldorf took the point on the full restart with “Racin’” Jason Witherite all over his back bumper. Witherite used one of his patented high side charges to take the lead from Womeldorf just before the second of several cautions waved. The limited lates would see their share of cautions on this Yellow Fever evening. On the ensuing restart, Witherite jumped into the lead as Luke Hoffner powered his way into second. Witherite would bobble in turns three and four while leading, collecting Womeldorf in the process. Hoffner would take the lead on the restart with Jake Shady and Dwayne Brooks right on his tail. Brooks worked his way into second, and quickly began to mount a challenge to Hoffner for the lead. Brooks would work the inside line to gain the lead from Hoffner out of turn two before another caution slowed the field. By the halfway point, the #00 of Eric Moore had made his way to the front and took over the second position. Moore would mount several challenges to Brooks on restarts, but was unable to make a pass for the lead. As the laps wound down, Brooks began to distance himself from the pack and took the win in commanding style. Following Brooks across the stripe were Moore, Shady, Hoffner and Chris Farrell. Shady lost his top three finish when he came up light at the scales. Heat races were won by Chris Farrell, Bobby McMillen and Dwayne Brooks.
The Pure Stocks took to the track with Todd English and Jody Frantz leading the 18 car field to the green. English took the early lead with Frantz and Jason Joiner fighting for second. Frantz began to put some pressure on English for the lead as Steven Cook joined the fray for third. The action was hot and heavy as the drivers were racing hard for position with a lot of beatin’ and bangin’ for every position. The one driver who was keeping his nose clean was the #1s of Kyle Shannon. Shannon started at the rear of the field and had patiently worked his way into the top five. After several laps of back and forth action the field began to settle in with English still in the lead and the #10N of Justin Kanouff taking over second. Kanouff would lose the handle in turn two ending a great run at the front. Shannon worked his way into second, while last week’s winner Matt Heindl settled into the third position. English continued to set the pace with Shannon applying heavy pressure at both ends of the bullring. Shannon mounted one last challenge on the white flag lap, but English turned him away in route to his first feature win of the season. The top five after 15 action packed laps were, English, Shannon, Heindl, Cook, and Kevin Clark. Heat race wins went to, Brian Boboige, Matt Heindl, and Steven Arthurs.
The Front Wheel Drives were up next to close out the night. Walt Fedder and Bryan Warren brought the field to start with Warren grabbing the lead in turn two. Warren would receive pressure all race long from Lee Zalno, Dustin Kemp who were swapping the second position. The #38A of Shawn Fedder and the #30N of last week’s winner Jacob Kline made their way through the field and began making their bids for a top five position. Up front, Warren continued to hold off the challenges while swapping paint with Zalno and Kemp on several occasions. With the laps winding down, Kemp was able to wrestle the lead away from Warren in turn two. Warren got shuffled back in the pack as Kline got around for second and began chasing down Kemp. Kline’s bid for two in a row fell short as Kemp held him off to take is first feature win. Following Kemp across the line were, Kline, S. Fedder, Zalno, and Warren. Heat wins went to Shawn Fedder, Dustin Kemp and Jacob Kline.
Pit Notes: 101 teams filled the pits including 24 Limited Late Models, 21 Street Stocks, 21 Pure Stocks, 23 Front Wheel Drives, and 12 Rear Wheel Drive 4 Cylinders.
