Shaw Public Library to Kick Off Summer Reading Program, Technology Helps Make Registration Easier

CLEARFIELD – The kickoff of Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library’s summer reading program is a month away, but new technology is making the registration process easier and enabling patrons to begin earlier.  This year, registrations for all summer reading programs will be completed online.

Beginning May 17, interested patrons may go to the Shaw Public Library’s Web site to register for the summer reading program.  Participants will need to click the provided registration link and will then be taken to the online registration program.  Once there, the individual will simply select the appropriate age level and signup for the program.  Any child in grade 5 or below needs to have a parent or guardian present during the registration process.  Registration is complete when the patron visits the library to receive the summer reading packet during kickoff week, which will be held June 14th through June 18th.

When recording books or minutes read, a pencil and paper is a thing of the past.  The online account created to register for the summer reading program will also serve as the patron’s account to keep track of books or minutes read beginning June 14.  The program will alert the participant to any bonuses earned and instruct them to visit Shaw Library to redeem all incentives.

The summer reading program is open to all children age birth through grade 5, all teenagers enrolled in grades 7 through 12, and all adults, including those graduating from high school in 2010.  The theme for the children’s program is “Make a Splash: Read!” and will feature games, crafts, stories, and presenters relating to water.  Children will learn about conserving water and staying safe when swimming, create bubbles and sand crafts, and participate in the Water Game Olympics.  Teens will participate in “Make Waves @ Your Library”.  They will have a number of fun activities including a poker tournament and scavenger hunt around Clearfield.  Adult patrons are invited to join the “Water Your Mind. Read.” program.

The Party on the Boardwalk kickoff event will be held June 14 and will feature the sights and sounds of a beach boardwalk right here in Clearfield.  In addition to doorprizes available to those who attend Party on the Boardwalk, any child or teen who registers for the summer reading program between May 17 and June 18 will receive an entry into a prize drawing during kickoff week.  In addition, the Family Fun Nights return with Gene Allen on June 21 at 6:30 p.m.  All participating families are encouraged to attend this entertaining program.

The Shaw Public Library is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., and Fridays from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Any interested patron in need of assistance with online registration, without Internet access at home, or with any other questions relating to the summer reading program may visit the library or call (814) 765-3271 during regular business hours.  Additional information can also be found on Shaw Public Library’s Web site.
