Golden Tide Unload on Visiting Glendale 16-0

CURWENSVILLE – In a week that the Curwensville Golden Tide baseball team may have scored the most runs in school history the Tide added visiting Glendale to “Thump Week”, beating the Vikings Thursday afternoon 16-0. In high school baseball’s version of the mercy rule the game was called with one out in the bottom of the third.

Junior Shae Best, having his best game ever for the Tide, ended the rout with a two run walk-off home run to center field that pushed Curwensville’s record to 6-1 on the season.

The Golden Tide banged out 13 hits in the trouncing and head coach Denny Johns continues to praise his offense, “We are just an extremely hot team when it comes to swinging the bat. It appears to be catchy as everyone seems to be getting in on the act. I just hope this continues next week and the weeks to follow. Right now we are just a very confident squad at the plate.”

On Monday the Tide pummeled Eats Forest 19-1. On Tuesday they hammered Kane 11-1. With the 16 runs against Glendale the Tide ended the week outscoring their opponents 46-2.

Curwensville jumped out in front 6-0 after the first inning was in the books thanks in part to Tide catcher Jonathan Michaels, who sent a blast over right center field for a three run home run.

The offense took a rest in the second for the Golden Tide but returned with a vengeance in the bottom of the third as the home team crossed the plate ten times to have the 15-run Mercy rule enforced.

Best paved the way for Curwensville with three hits and three RBI’s. Wes McGarry and Michaels, both seniors, also knocked in three teammates each. McGarry, Sam Gardner and Brett Sutika all had two hits.

Curwensville hit five doubles on the afternoon with Gardner having two and McGarry, Sutika and Hoover have one apiece.

With the Moshannon Valley League win the Tide improve to 2-0 in league play.

The Tide are off until Monday when they travel to St. Marys to play Elk County Catholic in a game scheduled to start at 4:15 pm.
