Flying Dutch Overpower Bisons 14-1 with 17-hit Attack

ST. MARYS – St. Marys backed Dave Sheeley’s three-hit pitching with a 17-hit attack, including four home runs, to make Clearfield’s visit to Berwind Park a short one Wednesday afternoon.

The Flying Dutch sailed to a 14-1 victory in the scholastic baseball game halted after 4½ innings because of the Mercy Rule.

The loss was very costly for the Bisons, who were off to a 4-1 start in the Central Penn League and 2-0 in the District 9 Northern Allegany League Big School Division.

Thanks to two pickoffs, Sheeley faced only 14 batters, one over the minimum, after Derek Danver singled to drive in Clearfield’s run in the first inning. Jarrett Fulmer had singled and advanced on two groundouts.

In the second, St. Marys knotted the count on Nate Geist’s RBI-single and got the winning run on the first of six Bison errors.

Three misplays around Kevin Hoy’s double gave the Flying Dutch a 4-1 lead after three.

Then, they pounded 11 hits for a 10-run outburst against loser Trevor Flanagan and reliever Tyler Jacobson in the fourth.

Jordan Weinzerl doubled across two runs and then trotted home on Hoy’s homer.

After Ryan Uhl singled, Jess Cogan, Luke Nicklas and Jake Damon clubbed back-to-back home runs. Rocco Harshbarger and Hoy later added RBI-singles.

Hoy enjoyed a 4-for-4 game, while Weinzerl, Cogan and Damon had two hits apiece.

St. Marys (3-2) is 2-1 in the D9NAL and 1-2 in the CPL.

Coach Sid Lansberry’s Bisons are 5-4 after three defeats in four days.

They’ll try to get back on the winning track Thursday at home against Altoona in their CPL finale. The Mountain Lions beat the Bisons 8-1 in the Curve Classic championship game Sunday.

Clearfield’s junior varsity defeated St. Marys 9-7 behind Kyler Kephart’s three singles, Levi Picard’s two doubles and three RBIs, Jordan Lancaster’s two hits and two RBIs and Curtis Frye’s two singles. Tanner Ogden was the winning pitcher.
