Check Out ‘Libraries: The Discovery Zone’ at Shaw Public Library

CLEARFIELD – National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of your local library.  First organized in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and occurs across the country each April.  The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library welcomes the Clearfield community in its doors to celebrate Libraries: The Discovery Zone April 11 through 17.  With several exciting events planned throughout the week, patrons of all ages will be entertained at their local library.

The Friends of the Shaw Public Library will kick off the week-long events with its annual fundraising campaign.  This year’s goal is to raise $10,000 for the Shaw Public Library.  “It is our hope that the generosity that the community has shown the library over the years continues this year,” stated Paula Marshall, director.  The Friends of the Shaw Public Library sponsors special events, programs, and provides financial assistance to the library for technology expenses and general operating costs.

Throughout National Library Week, any child who checks out a book will be entered into the Check Out to Win! prize drawing.  All children, ages birth through young adult, may choose a book to check out from the library collection in order to be entered.  Check Out to Win! entries can be earned from Monday, April 12th through Saturday, April 17th.  A winner will be chosen from all eligible entries at the close of business on Saturday.

On April 13, Shaw Public Library will sponsor Spring Fling Bingo at 1:30 p.m.  All adults are invited to the gather in the Reading Room of the Shaw Public Library to play bingo for great prizes.

One Book, Every Young Child, the Pennsylvania One Book Initiative, will be celebrated on April 15 from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m.  Leslie Stott, Clearfield Borough operations manager, and Susan Reed, council member, will share What a Treasure! by Jane and Will Hillenbrand, while children and their families enjoy activities and other stories.  Children ages 6 months through 5 years old and their families are encouraged to sign-up to attend the One Book, Every Young Child event.  Each family that participates in the program will leave the library with their own copy of What a Treasure!  Registration is limited to 100 families.

Finally, the library is sponsoring April Showers Bring May Flowers, beginning National Library Week.  Any patron who brings in a bouquet of artificial flowers will receive a voucher to checkout a DVD from the Shaw Public Library’s DVD collection.  April Showers Bring May Flowers will continue throughout the month of April.  DVD vouchers earned will be good through August 31.
