ALTOONA – Three Clearfield wrestlers kept Northwest Region Class AAA Tournament titles in their sights with quarterfinal victories Friday night in the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse.
Freshman 103-pounder Christian Stone engineered a fall, while seniors Kodie Lowder at 119 and Andre Buck at heavyweight recorded decisions to advance to today’s semifinals, which will begin at noon.
Four Bisons, including a trio of District 9 champions, recovered from losses in their opening matches to win in the first round of wrestlebacks, fueling their hopes of charging through the consolations to claim the bronze medal and qualify for next week’s state tourney at Hershey.
Three wins in six hours will be required for junior Shane Peters at 112, freshman Nolan Barger at 125, junior Derek Danver at 145 and junior Cliff Hill at 189 to accomplish that difficult task.
Barger, Danver and Hill were three of five District 9 titlists whose hopes for region crowns were dashed in the quarterfinals. Bradford 135-pounder Zach Britton and DuBois 152-pounder Matt Zimmerman also were upset.
Stone (31-7) was on his way to an early technical fall over Logan Bechdel of Central Mountain with a 13-0 lead when he pinned the Wildcat sophomore at 3:19.
In one of the highest scoring bouts of the marathon session, Lowder (26-10) defeated Johnstown’s Malcolm Harris 14-9.
Buck’s match with Philipsburg-Osceola’s Colton Wrye was just the opposite. The two heavyweights went into overtime 2-2, and Buck (25-7) escaped in the seventh period for the ultimate tiebreaker victory.
Erie Cathedral Prep’s surprising Dan Yori, who has 11 losses, made Barger (30-8) wait until the first consolation round to reach the 30-win plateau by registering a fall at 3:01. The Bison bounced back to major State College’s Josh Kunig 9-0.
Another stunner for Clearfield fans came at 145. Danver was edged 2-0 by Lewistown’s Cole Smith, who has 10 blemishes on his record. Danver (31-6) then came back to pin Matt Ostrander of Bradford in 2:51.
Hill also was a fall victim, with Colter Johnson of Warren averting his 10th loss by ending the bout at the 3:14 mark. Hill (30-9) responded with a 7-1 win over John Rivera of DuBois.
Peters (31-6) couldn’t get started against General McLane’s Tim Wheeling, losing 3-1 in the prelims, but he moved into the consolation quarterfinals by outlasting Central Mountain’s Cole Hanley 8-6.
Six Bisons were eliminated via two defeats.
Of the seven Bisons who wrestled in the prelims, only Andrew Hill at 130 and senior Wil Beauseigneur at 160 were victorious.
Hill got by Conneaut Lake’s Seth Rendulic 5-4, which pitted him against undefeated Steve Spearman of McDowell. The District 10 champ pinned Hill in 41 seconds, and then the Bison junior dropped an 8-7 heart-breaker.
Beauseigneur flattened Steven Granzeier of Brashear in 3:16 before losing 9-1 to District 10 champ Grant Chase of Erie Cathedral Prep and 4-0 to Dalton Lester of General McLane.
Soph Cody Lansberry (135), junior Shane Harper (140), senior Logan Shadeck (171) and soph Jordan Lancaster (215) were 0-2.
Clearfield sits in fifth place with 27 points, a half-point behind Corry.
With seven semifinalists and 65.5 points, District 6 power Central Mountain is running away with the team title.
Erie Cathedral Prep (42) is a distant second with Bellefonte (31) third.
Bradford (21.5) is ninth and DuBois (21) is 10th.
District 6 has the most semifinalists, 24. District 10 has 16, two more than District 9.
District 8 (Pittsburgh City League) has only one champion and one runner-up in the running for a region crown.
Consolation quarterfinals and consolation semifinals will be contested during the noon session.
The consolation finals are set for 5:30 p.m. The championship bouts will begin at approximately 6:30.
Champs, runners-up and consolation finals winners will go to the PIAA Class AAA Tournament booked for the Hershey Giant Center.
