In its first dual meet action in nearly two weeks, the Clearfield Bison wrestling team raised its record to 4-0 with a convincing 45-18 win over backyard rival Philipsburg-Osceola Mounties. “It wasn’t emotional, but it was a very business-like win for us,” commented head coach Jeff Aveni.
Cliff Hill started things off for the Bisons by picking up six easy points when he received a forfeit at 189 lbs.
At 215, Clearfield’s Andre Buck ground out a tough 4-3 victory by holding off Brett Hutton.
P-O’s Colton Wrye put the Mounties on the scoreboard with a second period fall of Jordan Lancaster at 285 lbs.
Shane Peters took the momentum back for the Bisons at 103 with a 20-1 technical fall over Chris Rocco in 5:02.
At 112, Clearfield’s Christian Stone and P-O’s David Miller hooked up in a close bout with Stone coming away with a hard earned 8-5 victory.
Nolan Barger wasted little time at 119lbs, putting Joseph Bainey in a cradle three times before registering the fall in 1:42.
Perhaps the most exciting bout of the evening occurred at 125 where seniors Kody Lowder and Nick Gurol battled for all six minutes. Trailing 5-4 after the first period, Lowder rode Gurol the entire second period and then registered an early third period escape to tie the bout at five. The Mountie was able to seal the victory with a takedown with just six seconds left in the bout. “That’s a tough loss for Kody, but he wrestled a good match,” said Aveni.
At 130, P-O’s Kenny Myers shut out the Bison’s Max Von Gunden 2-0 to momentarily stop the Bison’s run.
Bison Andrew Hill returned the favor at 135 lbs as he blanked Cody Buchanon 3-0.
Shane Harper padded the Bison lead with an 11-3 major decision over Derek Diehl at 140. Leading 6-3 in the third period, Harper hit a big five point move to seal the deal.
The other big bout of the evening saw Clearfield’s Derek Danver drop down a weight class to hook up with the Mountie’s Logan Walstrom at 145 lbs. Tied 2-2 after four minutes, Danver managed an escape and a takedown in the final period for the victory that wrapped up the dual meet win for the Bisons. “Derek looked real good against one of the region’s best wrestlers,” added Aveni.
Both teams would exchange pins in the next two bouts as P-O’s Lucas Greenawalt decked Cody Hepfer at 152 and Clearfield’s Wil Beauseigneur headlocked Wayne Davis for a second period fall at 160.
Logan Shadeck sent the Bison faithful home happy by flattening Brad Anstine in 4:35 at 171 lbs.
“We have a lot of wrestling to do over the next two weeks, but I’m pleased with where we’re at,” said Aveni.
Clearfield will be back in action Thursday night as they play host to the State College Little Lions.
