Lady Bisons Drop Johnsonburg 56-29

JOHNSONBURG – Things got a little easier Monday night in Johnsonburg for the Clearfield girls basketball team after a tough loss Friday night against the DuBois Lady Beavers.

Clearfield was clicking on all cylinders on the Ramettes home court as they came away with a convincing 56-29 victory.

The Lady Bisons started on a 10-0 run in the first eight minutes as Johnsonburg didn’t score a point until Anna Polaski  found the net for the Ramettes with twenty seven seconds left.

Clearfield continued to dominate with 17 points in frame number two as senior Jayme Ryan knocked down two treys for the Bisons to pull  away 27-8 at the half.  Ryan had nine points on the evening , all coming on three pointers.

Head coach of the Lady Bisons, Joey Castagnolo, was pleased with the effort and unselfishness of his squad, “That was one of the best passing games we have had in awhile.  The girls were really looking for each other the entire game.  Sharing the ball like that got everyone involved.”

After the break the Bisons had no trouble starting where they left off at the half as they once again scored 17 points compared to just five for Johnsonburg while increasing their lead to 44 -13 after three quarters were completed.

Madison Sopic had a big night for Clearfield as she hit for 15 points with Amber Byerly tallying 12.

The Lady Bisons, now 7-2 for the season, were 12 of 21 from the free throw line with senior Lori Zalno, off the bench, leading the way by connecting on 5 of 6 from the charity stripe.

Castagnolo knows this won’t be an easy week however as he stated, “We have two good teams left this week.  Elk County Catholic at home on Wednesday and then we go to St. Marys on Friday. So this is really going to test us.  Hopefully tonight will carry over.”

Johnsonburg, now 3-9 on the 2009-10 campaign, was paced by senior guard Polaski who netted 12 points in a losing effort.

The Ramettes also had a nice night at the line were they made 12 of 17.

The Clearfield junior varsity picked up a win in the opening battle as they beat Johnsonburg 41-22.

The Lady Bisons will be home on Wednesday night when they host Elk County Catholic in a game that can be heard on WOKW-FM, 102.9, starting at 7:15 pm with the pre-game.
