Redbank Valley Remain Perfect with 49-9 Win Over Golden Tide Wrestlers

CURWENSVILLE – It was all Redbank Valley Wednesday night as the Bulldogs downed Curwensville’s  wrestling team 49-9 on the Tide’s home mat at Patton Hall.

The Golden Tide fell to 3-5 on the year while the Bulldogs kept their record clean at 3-0 utilizing four falls and a forfeit on the night.

The night started just fine for Curwensville when sophomore Chad Desmett put the Tide in front 6-0 with a  fall in 2:56 over Cory Cyphert of Redbank.  The bout was scoreless when the pin came in the 171 pound weight class.

Then it was Redbank Valley starting their engines.  As a matter of fact, it was all Redbank Valley for a long time as the visitors scored 40 unanswered points until Brett Sutika pulled out a 2-1 decision at 140 for Curwensville over Evan Shirey.  Sutika made a second period reversal stand up before letting Shirey up for an escape as time ran out in the third and final period.

In a most bizarre ending, Derek Brothers, the Golden Tide 125 pound standout, actually pinned himself in the second period at 3:38 while leading Ty Haines 12-0. Brothers was in the midst of getting more back points, or perhaps even a pin, with a tilt move on Haines when he inadvertently touched his own shoulders to the mat giving the Bulldog wrestler a belated Christmas present.

Curwensville head coach Duane Wriglesworth knew all about Redbank Valley and said afterwards, “We knew coming in that Redbank had a pretty good squad and that we would have our work cut out for us tonight.”

Even with the lopsided defeat Wriglesworth found a positive, saying, “I really felt that we showed good conditioning this evening and that’s something we always strive to have in our squad.”

The Golden Tide junior high came through with a 52-36 victory over Redbank that started the evening action before a fairly full house at Patton Hall.

Curwensville returns to the mat next Tuesday when they travel to Moshannon Valley to battle the Black Knights.
