Golden Tide Losing Streak at Six After 63-50 Setback at Harmony

WESTOVER –  The Curwensville Golden Tide boys basketball team lost it’s sixth straight game Tuesday night at the hands of the Owls of Harmony, 63-50.

Harmony junior Erik Welteroth had a monster night for the Owls as he pumped in 28 points with 12 coming in the third quarter when his squad put the game away.  Welteroth scored nine first half points and then put the lid on the Tide with 19 in the second half.

The  Moshannon Valley League (MVL) contest started out fairly even with an 8-8 tie mid-way through the first eight minutes but then the Owls went on an 8-2 run to go out in front 16-10 after one frame.

In the second eight minutes Cameron Norris of the Owls showed why he is one of the top area scorers as he hit the nets for 11 to push  Harmony’s halftime margin to 31-21.

Harmony came out determined to put the game away early in the third quarter and at one point jumped their lead to 20 thanks to Welteroth and his already mentioned 12 points.  The Owls took a 47-28 bulge into the final stanza.

The Tide however wouldn’t go away quietly as they outscored Harmony 22-16 in the last eight minutes to make the score somewhat more respectable.  Tide senior guard Jed Greslick paced the late charge with eight fourth quarter points and led his team with 13.  Sam Gardner followed with 11 and Kyle Barrett chipped in with 10.

Harmony, after the 28 by Welteroth, saw Norris hit for 16 and Aaron Frailey drop in 10 of his own.

The Owls under Terry Kruise, in his 17th season, moved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in MVL play.  Matt Wassil and the Golden Tide fell to 2-6 on the season and dropped to 1-3 in the MVL.

The Junior Varsity tilt was also won by the Owls as they defeated the Tide underclassmen 42-35.

Curwensville won’t take to the hardwood again until next Tuesday (1/22) when they travel to Johnsonburg to battle the Rams.

Harmony is back in action on Wednesday at home against the Warriors of  West Branch in another Moshannon Valley League game.
