WINGATE – The undefeated Clearfield Area High School girls basketball team took command early and rode a three-pronged offense to a 52-41 win over Bald Eagle Area in the championship game of the BEA Holiday Tournament Tuesday evening.
Gwenn Porter, Amber Byerly and Madison Sopic scored 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the 3-0 Lady Bisons.
Porter, who was named the tourney\’s Most Valuable Player, netted 10 points as coach Joey Castagnolo\’s veteran team raced to a 34-18 halftime lead.
The Lady Bisons widened the gap to 20 points in the third quarter before the Lady Eagles (3-5) sliced the margin to nine points, 42-33, with a 13-2 run.
Two field goals by Elizabeth Peters made it 46-33 with 6:05 to play, and Clearfield was on its way to avenging a 67-46 loss to BEA in last year\’s title game.
Anne Hoover led the Lady Eagles with a game-high 18 points.
In the consolation game, Moshannon Valley (2-4) handed Jersey Shore (0-7) a 47-36 setback.
Clearfield returns return to action Monday in a non-league game at Philipsburg-Osceola.
