CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Chapter of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life committee, team captains, and volunteers got together to sign Christmas cards for cancer survivors. It is the first year they have done this as a group.
Relay for Life began over 20 years ago when a single man took it upon himself to raise money for the American Cancer Society. It is a celebration of survivors. Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.
Today more than three million Americans participate in Relay for Life. The event takes place overnight where team members take turns walking or running the designated track. Each teams tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
This year’s event will take place at the Clearfield Driving Park, June 5 – June 6, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. The event will have a carnival/circus theme. Relay for life raised $82,000 last year. According to Steve Livergood their goal is to raise $85,000 this year.
One of the volunteers, Dakota Farmery, is a student at Clearfield High School who is considering doing her senior project with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
So far this year, the Curwensville High School National Honor Society and the Curwensville High School volleyball team have donated money to the cause.
The group meets the first Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at 440 W. Front St. The next meeting is Jan. 4.
Teams are encouraged to sign up before Dec. 31 in order to take advantage of the $75 registration fee. After Dec. 31 the fee goes up to $150.
