CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Fall Ball Team opened its season by winning two of three games in its own Wood Bat Tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Field.
The hosts came from behind to defeat Brookville 6-3 on the first day and then split in Sunday action, losing 10-0 to DuBois before rebounding to top Moshannon Valley 11-8.
DuBois also finished 2-1 and won the title by virtue of its victory over Clearfield. The champs downed Mo Valley 12-5 in the tourney opener before bowing 4-2 to Brookville in Game 2.
Mo Valley salvaged one win, trimming Brookville 11-0 Sunday in a game stopped after the sixth inning because of the 10-run rule.
A pair of runs in the sixth inning made the difference for Clearfield against Brookville. Matt Lonjin singled for the game-winning hit after Tanner Ogden\’s double knotted the score at 3-3.
Clearfield, which tacked on two runs in the seventh, had only two other hits.
Trevor Flanagan struck out seven and allowed five hits in five innings to get the win, and Wes McGarry notched a save with two scoreless innings.
On Sunday, two DuBois hurlers combined to three-hit Clearfield over six innings, with the decision going to starter John Georgino. He hurled four innings and also had two of the winners\’ six safeties.
Maverick Vanderburgh and Flanagan belted run-scoring doubles and Derrick Snyder got the win for Clearfield against Mo Valley.
After relieving McGarry in the top of the fifth inning, Snyder benefited from a five-run rally that gave Clearfield the lead at 9-5. Tyler Jacobson recorded the final two outs to close out the victory.
Brandon Myers ripped two triples and Dylan Corl added two singles for Mo Valley.
Clearfield will be at home again next weekend, playing DuBois in a nine-inning game Saturday at 10 a.m. and taking on Altoona in a double-header Sunday at 1 p.m.
