Forfeit Win Gives Clearfield Legion Third Place in JCL

CLEARFIELD – One double-header and several forfeits over the weekend have set the teams for the Jefferson County Legion League Playoffs, but the pairings are still up in the air because DuBois and Punxsutawney still are battling for the regular season championship.

Clearfield and Curwensville will join those two in the double-elimination tourney that gets under way Thursday with the Chiefs and the Haymakers going on the road for their 5:30 p.m. games, which will be nine innings.

Brookville was eliminated from the post-season with a 14-6 loss to Punxsy Friday night. The Laurel Eye Clinic had kept its slim chances alive with an 11-5 win in the first game of that make-up twinbill.

Curwensville then forfeited two make-up games to Punxsy, while winless Reynoldsville forfeited its four remaining games to Clearfield, DuBois, Punxsy and Brookville.

The gift win locked up third place for Clearfield, which now will not play Tuesday\’s scheduled regular season finale against Curwensville since it has no bearing on the playoff seeding.

Instead, the Chiefs will travel to Punxsutawney to complete a game that was suspended because of rain on June 28. Clearfield leads 17-5 going to the fourth inning.

Manager Sid Lansberry\’s Chiefs also have a postponement with DuBois that is tentatively booked for Wednesday.

Current standings show DuBois (14-3) with a half-game lead for Monday evening\’s home game against Punxsutawney (14-4).

Clearfield is 10-7, Curwensville is finished at 9-10, Brookville is 8-11 with a home game against DuBois Tuesday and Reynoldsville has a finale record of 0-20.
