Punxsutawney Knocks Clearfield Out of Legion League Lead 15-5

HYDE – Braedon Pennington pitched five scoreless innings and Punxsutawney pounded seven extra base hits to replace Clearfield atop the Jefferson County Legion League with a 15-5 win at the Bison Sports Complex Sunday evening.

The Post 6 Chiefs slipped to 3-2, a half game behind Punxsy (3-1).

Clearfield managed only two hits off of Pennington and were in danger of falling victim to the JCL\’s new 12-run Mercy Rule before getting to reliever Tommy Bush for three runs in the sixth inning.

Jarrin Campman slapped a ground single to right field and scored on Justin Hoffman\’s line double to right center. Then, Andrew Redden jumped on a high fast ball and sent it over the fence in left center for two more runs.

Justyn Knepp led off the seventh with a homer to left center, prompting another pitching change for the visitors.

Dom Bevak walked Shane Harper, who came around to score on hits by Campman and Kyle Timchak and a groundout by Corey Bookhamer.

Campman collected three hits and Hoffman chipped in with a pair for Clearfield.

Bush paced Punxsy\’s 16-hit attack with three singles and a double. He added a sacrifice fly and finished with five runs batted in.

Leadoff batter Dakota Bish ripped three doubles and had two RBIs.

Sean Smith and Joe Pisano added two hits apiece, and Tyler Wingard contributed a three-run homer far over the left center fence that gave Punxsy a 7-0 bulge in the fifth inning.

The winners doubled their lead in the sixth, with two Clearfield errors making all but one of the runs unearned off Timchak.

Bookhamer, who worked five frames, was tagged with the loss. He gave up seven hits and three walks but did strike out 10.

The Chiefs, 4-4 overall, won\’t play again until hosting Bellefonte Sunday in a non-league double-header starting at 2 p.m.
