ST. MARYS – What a difference eighteen days can make.
On April 25 Elk County Catholic’s (ECC) baseball team visited Curwensville for a Saturday afternoon baseball matinee and completely manhandled the Golden Tide 11-1.
Update. On Wednesday the Golden Tide returned the manhandling by blanking ECC in six innings, 10-0 in St. Marys.
Ben McGary of Curwensville scattered four hits with five strikeouts to pick up the shutout and his fourth win of the 2009 campaign. Head coach Ryan Briskar of the Tide spoke about one of his senior leaders, “Ben (McGary) threw his best game of the year today. He had great control and good velocity.”
After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Tide exploded for six runs in the second inning fueled by a bases loaded double by Jed Greslick. Sam Gardner, Cory Bloom and Mark Dell’Antonio all had singles in the big second inning explosion.
Then in the sixth inning it was Jesse Hoover time, again. On Monday, Hoover, the Tide senior shortstop, smacked a walk off grand slam in the fifth inning in Curwensville’s 11-0 win over Kane. Ditto, sort of, on Wednesday.
Hoover had the bases loaded in front of him with one out and once again blasted a grand slam which gave the Tide a 10-0 margin, icing the game in six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. On the day Hoover drove in half of Curwensville’s runs with five.
Wes McGarry, Hoover and Greslick each had two hits for the winning Golden Tide which was mentioned by Briskar, “Jesse (Hoover) hit another grand slam to deep center field. Obviously he is hitting the ball very well. Wes (McGarry) continues his hot bat at the plate and it was nice to see Jed (Greslick) pick up a couple of base hits.”
Curwensville, now 11-5, will entertain Punxsutawney on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
