Golden Tide Outslug Brookville 11-6 for 5th Straight Win

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville high school baseball team showed no ill effects of an eight day layoff due to rain and nasty weather.

The Golden Tide picked up their fifth straight win of the year with an impressive 11-6 win over the Raiders of Brookville on Friday afternoon.

It was a seven run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning that did the trick for the Tide as they moved to 6-1 in 2009.

The Raiders scored the first run of the game in their half of the second with the Tide coming back with two in the bottom of the second triggered by a Jesse Hoover double to put the Tide in front.

Brookville would pick up a run in the third and another in the top of the fifth to go ahead 3-2. Then the Curwensville bats came to life.

The Golden Tide batted around in the fifth while putting up seven tallies to take complete control of the game. A Sam Gardner double along with singles by Ben McGary, Hoover and Jed Greslick led the way for the Tide outburst. Two walks and an error by Brookville also assisted the Tide in the big inning.

Ryan Briskar, Tide head coach, spoke about the eight day layoff, “ We were a little rusty at the plate, but turned it around as we came on strong in the fifth to take command of the game.”

Curwensville stroked four doubles on the way to their eleven hit game. Cory Bloom and McGary had the other doubles for Curwensville. McGary had the big day, going 3 for 4 at the plate and Briskar mentioned afterwards, “Ben had a huge day at the plate for us which really fueled our offense. He was just on top of his game in there.”

Briskar then added, Cory (Bloom), Jed (Greslick), Jesse (Hoover) and Sam (Gardner) also had big hits for us this afternoon. Sam and Jesse each drove in two runs.”

Curwensville would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Brett Sutika single and Bloom’s double. Sutika stroked two singles in the battle with the Raiders to help the Tide’s cause.

Wes McGarry went six strong innings for Curwensville to pick up his first win of the season. McGarry, who struck out eight was praised by his coach, “Wes was very focused and in control. He just did a great job out there.”

The Tide are back in action at 3:00 pm Saturday as they entertain Elk County Catholic in a battle for first place in the District 9 Northern Allegany League Small School Division Southern Tier.

Briskar knows what’s at stake in the immediate future for his crew, “We have a big week coming up and hopefully we continue to hit the ball well, just like today.”

After the Saturday fun fest with Elk County the Tide have four games next week. Monday they are home against Ridgway. Then three straight road games – Glendale on Tuesday,  Johnsonburg on Wednesday, and then Cameron County on Friday.
