CURWENSVILLE – The Lady Tide of Curwensville remained perfect on the year (7-0) and also in the newly formed District 9 Northern Allegany League Small School Division Southern Tier (5-0) with a 10-0 win over visiting Kane Thursday afternoon. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
It was a day when the Lady Tide offense picked away at Kane, scoring runs in each of the six innings, but having no monster innings like they are accustomed.
Curwensville was in control from the start behind senior pitcher Holly Lansberry, who threw her fifth one-hitter of the year while striking out 14. Lansberry and fellow senior Jenessa Stiles paced the offense with three hits each. Stiles had two doubles for the Lady Tide and along with Lansberry each drove home two runs.
Catcher Ashley Demchak had a fourth inning double for the Tide with Stacey Johnson, a junior first baseman, senior right fielder Erin Bressler and Shannon McDonald, senior shortstop picking up two singles apiece. McDonald now has 99 hits for her Lady Tide career and will join Demchak in the 100-hit club with her next base hit.
Head coach of the Tide, Allen Leigey, commented after the game, “I don’t know what else to say about Holly (Lansberry), she pitched another superb game and does what she needs to do to take care of business.”
Only a fifth inning single by Sam (Samantha) Ferranto prevented Lansberry from picking up her third no hitter of the season. Ferranto stroked a 1-2 pitch just over the head of Lady Tide second baseman Morgan Peterman to break up the gem.
Leigey also had praise for a few of his hitters, “Jenessa (Stiles) came up big with three hits and those two doubles. It was great to see Erin (Bressler), Shannon (McDonald) and Stacey (Johnson) get a couple of hits each. That really makes for a balanced offense.”
Then Leigey added, “I thought our bunting, we call it small ball, really shone today. It is great to see that part of our game produce a few runs.”
With the loss Kane now is even on the season at 3-3 and 3-2 in the District 9 Northern Allegany League Small School Division Southern Tier.
The Lady Tide will be on the road Monday when they travel to St. Marys to meet up with Elk County Catholic. Game time is 4:15 pm.
Note: The Lady Tide will host Sheffield in a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 7 at 3:30 pm in a make up from the rain out on Tuesday of this week.
