Golden Tide Make Short Work of Owls 15-0

CURWENSVILLE – It didn’t take long for the Curwensville Golden Tide to make quick work of Harmony Thursday afternoon in Moshannon Valley League (MVL) baseball action.

The Golden Tide racked up 11 first inning runs on their way to a 15-0 mercy rule victory which was called in the bottom of the fourth when the Tide plated run number fifteen.

The win gives Curwensville an overall record of 3-1 for 2009 and 1-0 in MVL play. Harmony is now 0-2 in league games.

Senior Jesse Hoover of Curwensville made his first outing on the mound a good one, as he threw a two hit shutout in the abbreviated contest while striking out nine. Hoover also connected for two home runs on the afternoon. One in the first and another in the second. Teammate Jed Greslick, a junior, also cracked a round tripper, which came in the first inning.

Head coach Ryan Briskar of Curwensville praised his pitcher, “Jesse just had a great day on the mound and at the plate. He threw very well. It was great to see him throw all three pitches effectively. He took a lot of pressure off of our defense and worked very hard on the mound.”

About Greslick, who had two hits, Briskar said, “Jed had a great day at the plate. He was struggling a bit, hopefully this will get him going.”

Concerning the easy win, Briskar mentioned, “Any win is a good win.”

The Tide had two doubles as Cory Bloom and Brett Sutika picked up extra base hits back to back in the first inning.

Harmony’s Roger Young had the only two hits off of Hoover, both singles.

The current MVL standings are: Curwensville 1-0, West Branch 1-0, Moshannon Valley 1-1, Glendale 0-0, Harmony 0-2.

Curwensville will host Moshannon Valley at 4:15 pm on Monday in another MVL league game.

NOTE: Curwensville athletic director announced some make-up dates for the Golden Tide baseball team. The Tide will host Cameron County on April 21 at 4:15 pm and then on May 5 they will entertain DuBois Central Catholic in a doubleheader that gets underway at 3:30 pm.
