Golden Tide Hardballers Win Slugfest Over Brockway 15-9 in Season Opener

CURWENSVILLE – Normally early in the season the pitchers have the edge over the hitters.

This, however, was not the case Tuesday afternoon as Curwensville out slugged visiting Brockway 15-9 to get the Golden Tide off and running on the new season. The Tide had ten hits while Brockway stroked nine.

Tide head coach Ryan Briskar said afterwards, “Offensively we did a great job. We put the ball in play and put pressure on them. We did what we needed to offensively. We got the bunts down when we needed them and had some very good hitting with Cory Bloom and Mark Dell’Antonio. Both had a huge game for us. Dell (Dell’Antonio) was 4 for 4. Cory (two hits) had some big time RBI’s early in the game. And Wes McGarry was on base for us five times with four walks and a single.”

It started early for the Tide, picking up four first innings runs thanks to three walks and then a single by Dell’Antonio to jump out in front.

Curwensville had two more big, productive innings when they tallied three times in the bottom of the third and five times in their half of the sixth. Bloom and Sam Gardner had doubles in the third while the Tide had four singles and two base on balls in the sixth.

The Tide did commit six errors, something not lost on Briskar, “Defensively, we did not have a Curwensville-like game. We committed six errors which will be addressed in practice as we try to improve in that area. That was one thing I thought we were ahead of, but today we didn’t do very well.”

Gardner picked up the win in relief for Curwensville and Briskar talked about the pitching for his squad, “ Pitching was good. Wes (McGarry) did what he needed to do, he got ground balls. But when you\’re having a bad defensive game we had to make a switch to Sam (Gardner). Sam came in and did a good job once he settled in. Ben (McGary) came in to close the last inning and did a great job.”

Curwensville will travel to Ridgway on Thursday to met the Elkers at 4:15 pm.
