CLEARFIELD – A Hyde man accused of stealing money from the Redwood Inn in Lecontes Mills waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
David McGovern is charged with burglary, theft by unlawful taking and criminal mischief.
According to court records the incident burglary occurred on Dec. 31, 2008 around 1:30 a.m. when someone entered the bar through two rear doors at the Redwood through force. Once inside the person removed cash from a cash drawer and a burgundy colored cash bag that was located in the freezer. The person then entered the bar area and removed cash from 10 white envelopes located in a drawer.
The total amount of cash stolen was $1,046. Damage was estimated at around $100.
On Jan. 2 a state trooper talked to the owner of the Redwood Inn who related that she thought she knew who committed the burglary. She told police that McGovern’s vehicle was parked in a field above the bar on Dec. 29 and there was a path that leads from the field to the bar. She also told police that right after the burglary McGovern was spending money that she knew he did not have.
On Jan. 4 police spoke with McGovern at the Clearfield barracks. According to the court records McGovern confessed to burglarizing the Redwood Inn and that he did take the money that was reported stolen.
McGovern also told police that he had spent all of the money on household items, automotive items and clothing. He reportedly told police that he was attempting to come up with the money to pay back the Redwood Inn’s owner.
