CURWENSVILLE – The second time around wasn’t the trick for the Curwensville boys basketball team Friday night as they were beaten by the visiting Brockway Rovers, 62-46.
With the home court defeat the Tide dropped to 5-10 on the 2008-09 campaign, while the Rovers evened out at 7-7.
Just like the first game, won by Brockway on December 10, 63-49, the Rovers jumped out to a huge first period lead and never looked back. This time Brockway built a 21-8 advantage after the first eight minutes.
The second stanza proved to be no better than the first as Brockway took a 20 point bulge into the lockers at the half, 37-17. That was due to the Rovers having a 16-9 edge in period two.
Brockway had two players in double figures after the first half, Mark Shannon hit on 11 of his game high 20 and Nick Anderson 14 of his overall 16. Those two ended up leading the Brockway five to the victory.
Due to a fourth quarter surge the Golden Tide did cut the final margin of victory to 16 thanks to outscoring the Rovers 16-9. At one time in the third period the Rovers stretched the margin to 23 over their hosts.
As Curwensville head coach Matt Wassil said afterwards, “We just didn’t seem to play with very much enthusiasm in the first half. We continue to have problems getting started in the first quarter, and teams, like Brockway, have taken advantage of that.”
Wassil also added, “All in all I am still very proud of these guys. They did continue to battle back in the second half even though we had dug a big hole for ourselves in the first half.”
The Tide was paced by senior David Kalgren and his 16 points.
Curwensville is back in action on Monday night when they play the Cardinals of DuBois Central Catholic at home at Patton Hall.
In junior varsity play it was Curwensville stopping Brockway 39-34.
