WINGATE – Bald Eagle Area won its own girls basketball holiday tournament by outscoring Clearfield 18-3 in the turnaround second period and widening the gap in the second half for a 67-46 victory Monday night.
Tourney Most Valuable Player Amelie DeGueldre, a foreign exchange student from Belgium, poured in 22 points, all but four coming in the last two periods, for a two-game total of 44.
Margaret Rougeux and Brittany Butterworth chimed in with 13 and 11 points, respectively, as the Lady Eagles climbed above .500 with their fifth win.
Amber Byerly led the 3-3 Lady Bisons with 11 points.
A pair of three-pointers by Jayme Ryan helped coach Joey Castagnolo\’s team build a 14-7 lead, but Butterworth hit a trey near the end of the first period to trigger a 21-3 run that gave the Lady Eagles a 28-17 halftime advantage.
Rougeux, whose father, John, graduated from Clearfield St. Francis High School, and Butterworth keyed BEA\’s second period outburst with five points apiece.
Clearfield, which missed 13 of its 14 field goal attempts in the second quarter, never got any closer than 11 points in the second half.
A key for BEA, according to Castagnolo, was the Lady Eagles\’ ability to penetrate the Lady Bison zone defense for pull-up jumpers and lay-ups.
Lady Bison Annie Janocko was named to the all-tournament team with DeGueldre, Butterworth, Moshannon Valley\’s Shannon Greslick and Jersey Shore\’s Julie Stevenson.
In the consolation game, Jersey Shore (4-4) nipped Mo Valley (2-4) on a last-second field goal.
The Clearfield junior varsity fell to 3-3 with a 25-24 loss to Mo Valley. Julie Ammerman scored eight points for the Lady Bisons.
Clearfield returns to action Monday with a home game against Philipsburg-Osceola.
