BROCKWAY – The trip to Brockway proved to be one of balance Wednesday night for the Curwensville boys basketball team. Unfortunately all the balance was in favor of the Brockway Rovers who picked up their first win of the season, 63-49, over the Golden Tide.
The Rovers, 1-2, had four of their starters hit for double figures in an Allegheny Mountain league contest. With the setback the Tide fell to 0-2 on the young season.
Sophomore Cody Anderson was the story of the first half as the quick guard hit for 15 to pace Brockway to a ten point lead at the break, 33-23. Cody, one of three Andersons in the starting five for the Rovers actually finished with those 15 as he was shutout in the last two frames. No problem.
Two other Andersons stepped up on the evening to secure the victory.
Craig Anderson lead the Brockway squad with 17 while Nick Anderson chipped in with 13. The Anderson trio, who are all from different families, actually almost beat the Tide themselves with a total of 45 points.
Mark Shannon, the 6’ 5” senior center, also threw in 13 points to give the balance that Brockway utilized for the win.
Curwensville head coach Matt Wassil saw little improvement but said afterwards, “ We just missed too many easy shots throughout the game. We have a bunch of work to do before we become the team we want to be. These guys will, however, continue to work very hard to get better.”
Tide senior David Kalgren kept the Curwensville squad in the game somewhat as he poured in 23, seventeen of those coming in the second half. Sam Gardner hit for 11 to help out the Golden Tide who were outscored in every quarter by their hosts.
Brockway also won the junior varsity tilt with a 47-42 triumph over Curwensville.
The Tide return to the hardwood with their first home game of the year when they entertain the visiting Ridgway Elkers Friday night at Patton Hall. Junior varsity action starts at 6 pm with the varsity to follow.
