Johnsonburg Spoils Lady Bisons Season Opener 61-38

HYDE – The Johnsonburg girls basketball team evened their record to 1-1 on the young season as they ran away from the Clearfield Lady Bisons Monday night, 61-38. It was the season opener for the Clearfield squad who had higher hopes playing at home against the Ramettes.

The Lady Bisons jumped out to a 14-5 lead midway through the first period before the Ramettes decided to put it in gear.

Johnsonburg ended the opening eight minutes only trailing 14-11 which really put their entire game into full swing the rest of the way.

Outscoring Clearfield in the second quarter 12 to 4 gave the visitors a five point lead at the break, 23-18. Then it got worse. The Ramettes put the game out of reach in the third period with a 22 to 6 bulge to up their lead by 21 after three, 45-21.

Clearfield head coach, Joey Castagnolo, said afterwards, “We are extremely disappointed with the outcome. Johnsonburg has a nice team but I never thought it wouldn’t be much closer than this.”

Castagnolo added, “I was happy with the way we started out, taking a 9 point lead early. Then we got away from our style of ball and that cost us. When we started to miss shots, and we missed a lot of them, we got down on ourselves. This team can’t afford to do that.”

The Lady Bisons did get some offensive production in the final frame when they put up 14 points while Johnsonburg added 16 to their final total.

Clearfield was paced by senior Annie Janocko with 9 points while junior Madison Sopic chipped in with 7.

The Ramettes were driven by Ellie Kojancic with 17, followed by Bobbi Pritt with 12 and Abby Grumley dumping in 10. Grumley now needs a little more than 200 points to reach the career milestone of 1,000.

On the evening the Ramettes committed 38 turnovers which the Clearfield squad just couldn’t take advantage.

The Clearfield JV squad won the opening game 30-21.

The Lady Bisons won’t test the waters again until next Monday when they travel to Westover to play a very good and aggressive Harmony team in a very tough environment.
