Campus Corner: Golden Tide Reunion on Clarion Gridiron, Lhota Nets First Goal

CLARION, Pa. – A quartet of former Curwensville Area High School standouts played in Saturday evening\’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game that resulted in visiting Slippery Rock rolling to a 49-14 win over Clarion.
 
Offensive lineman J.D. Skebo saw the first significant action of his career and linebacker Nate Sipes was on the field most of the second half and also had one tackle on the kick coverage unit for The Rock, which evened its PSAC-West record at 2-2 and climbed over .500 at 4-3 for the season.
 
A partisan Memorial Stadium crowd of 4,000, including members of the Curwensville Area High School band, didn\’t have a lot to cheer about for the Golden Eagles, who tumbled to 1-6 with their fourth consecutive conference loss.
 
However, free safety Shawn Sopic starred for the Clarion defense with a game-high six solo tackles and 10 total stops, while fullback Nick Sipes blocked a punt in addition to rushing three times for nine yards and catching one pass for five yards.
 
Nick Sipes remains the No. 2 rusher for the Golden Eagles with 231 yards and a team-high 5.6 yards for 41 carries. He has caught eight passes for 44 yards.
 
The sophomore also is a regular on the specialty teams and has seven tackles in addition to the blocked punt.
 
Sopic leads Clarion\’s defense with 25 solo stops and is third in total tackles with 42. The sophomore has two tackles for losses, one forced fumble, three passes defended and two of the team\’s three interceptions.
 
Sopic also has taken over as Clarion\’s holder for placekicker Robert Mamula.
 
Nate Sipes has 15 tackles, including 10 solo stops, for the Slippery Rock defense. The redshirt junior has one tackle for a loss.
 
Skebo has moved into a blocking role for The Rock\’s extra point and field goal units, lining up at both guard positions against Clarion.
 
The redshirt junior has been shifted from guard to center on The Rock\’s second offensive unit and anchored a group that opened holes for two long TD runs by SayQuan Scott-Mitchell in the fourth quarter.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Quarterback Tanner Kelly of Olanta (Clearfield Area H.S.) enjoyed his best passing game of the season with 33 completions for 274 yards and a pair of touchdowns at David Person Field Saturday, but Albright paid for a slow start and its Middle Atlantic Conference title hopes took a hit as Lycoming sent a Homecoming crowd of 3,219 home happy with a 23-13 win.
 
The 3-2 Lions, who have only two first-half TDs in the first half of the season, fell to 1-1 while the 4-1 Warriors ended up one of two teams with a 2-0 getaway in the MAC.
 
Kelly posted season-highs for completions, yards and attempts (41), but he was intercepted once and lost a fumble that Lycoming recovered for a TD and a 20-0 lead at the outset of the second half.
 
Kelly accounted for both Albright scores, including a 15-yard pass on the final play of the game. That TD capped a nine-play, 80-yard drive in just 1:03. Kelly completed six of seven aerials for 71 yards.
 
The redshirt junior was sacked four times for 23 yards in losses and finished with two net yards for 12 rushing plays.
 
He punted five times for a 31.8-yard average and was named MAC Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time this year.
 
Kelly made his second tackle of the season after suffering his fourth interception of 2008.
 
He leads the MAC with 93 completions and 64.6 completion percentage, ranks second in total offense with an average of 222 yards per game and is tied for second in TD passes with eight.
 
His 948 passing yards, 189.6 per-game average 132.7 passing efficiency rating are good for third place.
 
Kelly also is fourth in punting with a 35.1 average for 21 kicks.
 
He has kept the ball 56 times for 162 yards, his net total reduced by a dozen sacks for 69 yards.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Junior defensive back Beau Ryan of Clearfield assisted on two tackles for Juniata Saturday in a 38-7 loss to homestanding Muhlenberg in front of 1,351 fans in Scotty Wood Stadium.
 
The undefeated Mules, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division III, ran their regular-season winning streak to 16 with their fifth win of the season, which gives them a 3-0 start in the Centennial Conference.
 
Juniata is 1-5 with a 1-3 conference record.
 
Ryan has nine stops, including five solo tackles.

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Sophomore tailback Tyler Kirkwood of Frenchville (Clearfield Area H.S.) played in Grove City\’s 38-13 win over Geneva at Robert E. Thorn Field Saturday.
 
A crowd of 3,200 watched the Wolverines beat the Golden Tornadoes for the first time since 1979.
 
Kirkwood has seen action in every game for the Wolverines, who are 4-2.

MEN\’S SOCCER
 
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore midfield John Lhota of Clearfield scored his first goal of the season for Washington & Jefferson in a 5-2 loss to St. Vincent Saturday.
 
He converted on a pass from Geoff Attinger in the 84th minute.
 
Lhota also started in the Presidents\’ 2-1 win over Geneva at Beaver Falls on Oct. 8.
 
He has seven shots in 12 games, and five have been on goal.
 
W & J will take a 4-5-3 record into its six-game Presidents\’ Athletic Conference schedule.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Lucas Feathers of Clearfield saw action in a reserve role as Slippery Rock improved to 8-4-1 with home wins over Wheeling (W.Va.) Jesuit 2-0 Oct. 7 and Bloomsburg 2-1 Saturday.
 
The junior forward had five of The Rock\’s 25 shots in the Bloomsburg game, which was decided in the final minute when Jeremy Deighton cashed in a loose ball in front of the net.
 
Feathers has scored three goals and one assist, all in The Rock\’s first four games. He\’s played in 12 games, eight as a starter.

WOMEN\’S SOCCER
 
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Sophomore forward Juliana Howell of Clearfield had one shot on goal in Slippery Rock\’s 2-0 road victory over Wheeling (W.Va.) Jesuit Saturday.
 
She did not play in The Rock\’s 2-1 home win over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division rival Clarion on Oct. 7.
 
In nine games, eight as a starter, Howell has registered two goals and one assist for five points. Four of her eight shots have been on goal.
 
The Rock, 9-3-1 overall, is fourth in the PSAC-West with a 5-2-1 record.

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Dani Struble of Lumber City (Curwensville Area H.S.) logged her eighth and ninth starts of the season in Westminster\’s non-conference wins over St. Vincent 3-1 and Geneva 4-0 last week.
 
The sophomore midfielder got off one shot against visiting Geneva Saturday, upping her total to 11 for the 10-2-1 Titans.
 
Struble, who has played in every game, has two shots on goal but no points.
 
Westminster is 1-0 in the Presidents\’ Athletic Conference.
