READING, Pa. – Redshirt junior quarterback Tanner Kelly of Olanta (Clearfield Area High School) didn’t throw a touchdown pass for only the third time in 23 starts for Juniata, but the Lions got a pair of kick return TDs to defeat visiting Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham 24-17 in the 58th annual Pretzel Bowl in Shirk Stadium Saturday.

Kelly completed a season-high 19 passes for a season-low 136 yards as the Lions climbed to 3-1 in front of only 457 fans at the Middle Atlantic Conference opener.

He hit eight of 12 aerials for 54 yards in guiding the Lions 72 yards in 2-1/2 minutes to set up John Whelan’s 33-yard field goal with three seconds left in the first half that put Albright ahead to stay 10-9.

Kelly, who was intercepted once, also kept the ball 12 times for 37 rushing yards and punted six times for a season-high 38.2 average.

For the season, Kelly has 44 carries for 160 yards and 60 completions in 100 passes for 674 yards and six TDs, with three interceptions. His passing efficiency rating is 130.42.

In the MAC, Kelly ranks fourth in total offense with 834 yards and a 208.5 per-game average. He’s third in completions, tied for third in TDs, fourth in pass attempts and passing efficiency and sixth in passing yards.

CLARION, Pa. – Sophomore fullback Nick Sipes of Curwensville caught two passes for 19 yards and made two tackles while sophomore free safety Shawn Sopic of Curwensville had four tackles for Clarion in Saturday’s 52-20 loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division power California.

A crowd of 6,200 in Memorial Stadium saw the visiting Vulcans, ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division II, win their third consecutive PSAC-West game for a 5-1 record and dropped the Golden Eagles to 1-5, including three conference losses.

Sipes recorded his stops on a punt return and an interception.

He is Clarion’s second-leading rusher with 38 carries for 222 yards, good for a team-high 5.8 yards per carry, and two touchdowns. He has seven pass receptions for 39 yards and also has totaled seven tackles.

Sopic is second on defense with 19 solo tackles and four with 32 total stops. He has two tackles for losses and two of Clarion’s three interceptions.

INDIANA, Pa. – Redshirt junior linebacker Nate Sipes of Curwensville played for Slippery Rock in a tough 23-16, double-overtime loss to 19th-ranked Indiana with 6,216 fans looking on at Miller Stadium Saturday.

The Rock (3-3) dropped to 1-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. Indiana (4-1) is 2-1.

Sipes has nine solo tackles and six assists for 15 total stops.

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Junior defensive back Beau Ryan of Clearfield and junior fullback Devin Yastro of Olanta (Clearfield Area H.S.) helped Juniata celebrate its first Centennial Conference win before a crowd of 800 at Chuck Knox Stadium Saturday.

The Eagles had lost all 10 CC games since joining the conference last year.

Ryan has seven stops, including five solo tackles in five games.

Yastro has played in two games.

Juniata is 1-2 in the conference and 1-4 overall.

TAMPA, Fla. – Redshirt freshman quarterback Andrew Janocko of Clearfield played a role in eight points as placekicker Conor Lee’s holder in Pitt’s 26-21 upset over No. 10 South Florida in the nationally-televised Big East Conference game in Raymond James Stadium Thursday night.

Lee booted field goals of 31 and 35 yards and extended his career streak of consecutive extra points made to 87 with two conversions to help deflate the capacity crowd of 50,307.

The win was the Panthers’ second in a row in the Big East and fourth since being upset by Bowling Green in their opener.

South Florida dipped to 5-1 after their Big East opener.

LATROBE, Pa. – Sophomore tailback Tyler Kirkwood of Frenchville (Clearfield Area H.S.) played in Grove City’s 27-12 victory over host Saint Vincent at Chuck Noll Field Saturday.

A crowd of 2,325 saw the Wolverines improve to 3-2.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Lock Haven sophomore midfielder Mark Auman of Clearfield started for the eighth time this season in the Bald Eagles’ 1-1 double-overtime tie with Mercyhurst Oct. 1.

He had one shot on goal Saturday when the Bald Eagles (7-4-2) topped rival Bloomsburg 3-1 to stretch their unbeaten streak to five games.

Auman has one assist and six shots, including two on goal, for Lock Haven, which is 2-1-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division.

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder John Lhota returned to the starting lineup for Washington & Jefferson Saturday and had two shots, one on goal, in the Presidents’ 1-1 double-overtime tie with Elizabethtown.

Lhota also played in a 1-0 loss to Franciscan (Ohio) on Oct. 1.

Four of his six shots this season have been on goal, but he has not been able to find the back of the net.

W & J is 3-4-3.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Sophomore Juliana Howell of Clearfield started at forward for Slippery Rock in a pair of setbacks last week, 2-0 at California on Tuesday and 2-1 in overtime at East Stroudsburg on Sunday.

She had one shot against East Stroud and now has seven shots, three on goal, in eight starts for The Rock.

Despite missing three games, Howell is tied for fifth in points with five. One of her two goals was a game-winner.

Slippery Rock is 7-3-1 with a 4-2-1 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Sophomore midfielder Dani Struble of Lumber City (Curwensville Area H.S.) got off one shot on goal in Westminster’s 3-2 win over host Thomas More in their Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener Saturday.

She has eight starts in 11 appearances for the Titans but still is looking for her first points after 10 shots, including two on goal.

Westminster is 8-2-1.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder Jen Williams of Clearfield saw action as Lock Haven split a pair of 1-0 home games last week, losing to Mercyhurst Tuesday and coming back to nip Mansfield Saturday.

She has played in every game, with one assist and two shots, for the 5-6 Lady Eagles, who are 2-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division.
