CURWENSVILLE – Tuesday evening\’s Philipsburg-Curwensville opener in the VFW Teener Area VI 15-and-16 Tournament was stopped in the bottom of the third inning because of lightning and then suspended because of heavy thundershowers.
The teams will return to the Curwensville Area High School Field Sunday at 5 p.m. for the completion of the game, with Philipsburg holding a 2-0 lead.
Tom Cheskey scored both of the visitors\’ runs on singles by Coltyn Wrye.
In the first inning, he beat out a grounder to deep short and advanced to second on an error before Wrye rammed a hit through the left side.
In the third frame, Cheskey walked and immediately stole second. Wrye followed with a fly ball that dropped in short right center.
Those were the only hits allowed by Curwensville left-hander Wes McGarry, who struck out four and walked one.
Wrye, meanwhile was sailing along on a two-hitter with six strikeouts through 2-2/3 innings.
Curwensville will play at Punxsutawney Thursday. Philipsburg will entertain Punxsy Friday in a game that was originally scheduled for Saturday.
The three teams will complete the double round-robin tourney next week, with the champion and runner-up moving on to the state tourney in Mount Union Aug. 7-10.
