DUBOIS – Punxsutawney knocked regular season champion DuBois out of the Jefferson County Legion League Playoffs Monday evening with a 13-1 win at Showers Field in the completion of a game that had been suspended because of rain Sunday.
The runner-up John J. Fisher Post 62 team will return to its home field Tuesday to take on Clearfield in the championship game of the double-elimination tournament. The teams split their four games in the regular season, with the Chiefs finishing in third place.
Clearfield, 17-12 overall, is 2-0 in the tourney but must go to Rich Kuntz Memorial Field for the 5:30 p.m. game because the team with the higher finish during the regular season gets home field advantage.
The Chiefs, who defeated Punxsy 12-5 last Wednesday and DuBois 18-12 Friday, will reign if they are victorious.
If Punxsy (17-6) wins, the two teams will meet again Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with a berth in the Region 7 Tournament at stake. The regional begins Saturday at Bellefonte.
Punxsy led DuBois 7-1 in the top of the fifth inning when their loser\’s bracket final was halted Sunday afternoon and widened the margin to 11-1 when play resumed.
Austin Furman then pitched three shutout innings to save the win for Nick Gillung, who gave up a solo home run by Kasey Clinton during his four-inning stint. The two combined for eight strikeouts and three walks.
Dane Kopas had three of Punxsy\’s 13 hits, while Gillung and Jacob Stumpf rapped two-run doubles and Tommy Bush added a pair of RBI-singles.
The game was shortened to seven innings because of the 10-Run Rule.
DuBois finished the season with back-to-back playoff losses and a 15-5 record.
