HESSTON, PA – Two sprint features produced two different winners at Hesston Speedway Saturday night with Mike Freet winning the make up feature from June 21 and Mark Watkins winning the regular nights event.
Mike Shoemaker won the limited late model feature while Khi Swanger won the street stock main and Carl Snare won his first in the hobby stocks.
The late models hit the oval with Brad Kling and Rick Singleton on the front row with Kling taking the lead and Singleton second and Mike Shoemaker in third. Singleton spun on lap three and had to tail the field. On the restart Shoemaker started to hound Kling for the lead and the pair ran side by side with Kling on the bottom and Shoemaker on the outside. Shoemaker tried the outside for several laps before it finally worked to his advantage and he took the lead on lap 14, but Kling didn’t let him run off as he battled back and finished second by only a half a car length at the line. The top five were: Shoemaker, Kling, Rance Garlock, Derek Byler and Mike Duck. Heat wins went to Mike Shoemaker, Rance Garlock and Rick Singleton.
Ma rk Watkins beat fellow front row starter Cliff Conner into the first turn of the sprint feature with Mike Heckman in second and Conner falling to third. As the race continued it was all Watkins, as he weaved his way through lapped traffic and took the win over Heckman, Conner, Jim Kennedy and Andy Haus. The heat wins went to Cliff Conner, Mark Watkins and Mike Heckman.
Jarrett Walker and Jesse Snyder led the street stocks to the start with Snyder taking the lead and setting the pace. Spencer was able to hold off Tom Williams for several laps before Khi Swanger moved into second and brought Bill Henney into third. As the race neared its conclusion Snyder lost the lead to Swanger and then fell to third behind Henney. At the finish it was Khi Swanger taking another win over Henney, Snyder, Walker and Williams. Jesse Snyder, Jarrett Walker and Bill Henney split the heat wins.
Carl Snare earned his first career Hesston Speedway feature win in the hobby stocks on Saturday night after beating Josh Berrier into the first turn. Berrier tried several grooves but couldn’t get around him, then he spun and had to tail the field. As the race resumed it was still Snare in the lead with Joe Dearmitt now in second and Chris Chaney in third. The race came down to the final few inches as Dearmitt tried the low side with Snare still holding his line and getting his first win of the season. Dearmitt, Chaney, Joe Hammers and Curtis Guyer completed the top five. Heat wins went to Josh Berrier, Carl Snare and Gary Morder.
The make-up sprint feature from June 21 saw Mike Freet and Roger Irvine on the front row, with Freet taking he lead and never looking back. Irvine got close at times, but there was no catching Freet as he picked up his first victory of the season at Hesston Speedway. Irvine, Erin Stoatler, Andy Haus and Mark Watkins completed the top five. The heat wins went to Mike Freet, Roger Irvine and Erin Stoatler.
