HYDE – Michael Moyer pitched a five-inning one-hitter and the Clearfield Legion baseball team exploded in the third inning for 12 runs on 11 of their 15 hits en route to a 16-0 win over Reynoldsville in its regular season home finale at the Bison Sports Complex Thursday evening.
The third-place Chiefs did not gain any ground in the Jefferson County League race, though, for DuBois clipped Curwensville 21-6 and Punxsutawney trimmed Brookville.
Brookville still locked up the fourth spot for the JCL Playoffs which begin next week.
In ending Reynoldsville\’s playoff aspirations, the Chiefs stung the ball as hard as they have all season.
Derek Danver ripped three hits, including a solo home run for Clearfield\’s first run in the second inning, while four teammates chimed in with two safeties apiece.
James Zimmerman drove in three runs with home run and single. Kyle Kline and Parker Herrington each had a single and a double. And Wil Bacharach added a pair of singles and two RBIs.
Meantime, Moyer was in cruise control on the mound, retiring the last nine batters he faced. The right-hander struck out nine, five on called third strikes, and walked only one in chalking up his fifth win in six decisons.
Reynoldsville\’s lone hit was a double off the center-field fence by Jimmy Maddox in the second inning.
Clearfield batted around twice in the third-inning outburst, chasing both Andy Malmgren and Andy Keller before Kyle Mann finally restored order.
Zimmermann, Kline, Danver and Herrington each had two hits, and Adam Jury and David Ryan contributed two-run singles.
A trio of unearned runs, two coming on singles by Bacharach and Matt Lonjin, in the fourth made it a Mercy Rule victory for manager Sid Lansberry\’s Chiefs, now 14-11 for the season.
They will play Curwensville at Hepburnia Saturday at 5 p.m. and journey to DuBois Sunday and Punxsutawney Monday for make-up games.
