DuBois Outlasts Clearfield 16-13 in Legion Marathon

HYDE – T.J. Anderson singled five times and scored four runs while Kasey Clinton drove in five runs with a pair of homers to key a 20-hit attack on four Clearfield American Legion Post No. 6 pitchers that carried visiting DuBois to a 16-13 victory at the Bison Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Chiefs collected 13 hits and had five players with at least two safeties, two of whom didn\’t enter the game until the fifth inning.

Justin Hoffman led the way with a trio of singles and two RBIs. Isaac Butler had two singles and three RBIs.

James Zimmermann, Adam Jury and Derek Danver had two hits apiece, including doubles by Zimmermann and Jury.

Down 2-0 in the second inning, Clearfield came up with three runs after DuBois starter Richie Pruzinsky hit Aaron Sayers and walked Matt Lonjin. A two-out error gave the Chiefs new life, and courtesy runner and Jarrin Campman scored when Zimmerman\’s line single to right was misplayed. Jury followed with an RBI-double to right center, making it 3-2.

Because he will be pitching against Reynoldsville Tuesday, Clearfield starter Michael Moyer was limited to three innings, striking out five and giving up five hits and two earned runs.

Parker Herrington relieved in the fourth, and DuBois tied the Jefferson County League game when Billy Mumma bunted for a hit, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch.

Then, the JCL rivals combined for 23 runs and 23 in the last three frames.

DuBois (3-1) took the lead for keeps with four runs in the fifth, two on Clinton\’s first homer, to pin the loss on Herrington.

Clearfield (3-4, 3-3 JCL) came back with three markers, two via errors and the other on Butler\’s groundout, but DuBois responded with another four-spot off Corey Bookhamer in the sixth. Phil Smith and Pruzinsky delivered two-run singles.

In the lower sixth, Hoffman and Butler singled home runs as the Chiefs trimmed the deficit to 11-8.

The teams matched five-run rallies in the seventh, Clinton\’s three-run blast to left center and John Hartzfeld\’s two-run double down the third base line the big blows for DuBois.

Again, the Chiefs clawed back, Mumma departing after three hits around an error produced one run and left the bases loaded.

Clinton came on to save after the win for Mumma, but not before another error, a walk and Hoffman\’s third single made it 16-11 with the bases still filled with Chiefs.

DuBois shortstop Anderson turned Bacharach\’s bouncer into a big double play with Danver scoring. Butler singled for the final run before Clinton ended the marathon with a strikeout.

Clinton, Dante DeSantis and Mumma each had three hits for the winners. Hartzfeld and Pruzinsky added two apiece. Pruzinsky drove in three runs and DeSantis joined Smith and Hartzfeld in the two-RBI column.

Clearfield will be at home against Reynoldsville Tuesday and play Curwensville at Hepburnia Friday. Both games will start at 6 p.m.
