CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, Inc., partnering with the American Association of Retired Persons, is offering area individuals aged 50 and older the opportunity to take the AARP Driver Safety Course.
The classroom course, formerly titled “55 ALIVE”, was developed by AARP to help drivers remain safe on today’s roads while providing some with the bonus of a multiyear discount on their car insurance. The course will be held June 10 and 11 at the Salvation Army in Clearfield, 119 Byers Street, Clearfield from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
The course is designed to meet the specific needs of older drivers. It covers age-related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road, local driving problems, and license renewal requirements. Volunteer instructors, recruited and trained by AARP, conduct the course that is presented through a combination of video presentations and group discussion.
All automobile insurance companies conducting business in Pennsylvania are required to provide a premium discount to all graduates of the DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM who are 55 years of age and older. Although geared to drivers 50 and over, the class is open to all ages, and it is not necessary to be a member of AARP. However, additional savings are available to AARP members through the Buddy Program: members may also register a buddy for free, one $10 fee covers both.
Checks for the $10 fee are to be made payable to AARP, and must be given to the instructor on the first day of class. Reservations and completed applications are required prior to the first day of class. Class size is limited and reservations are taken on a first-come/first-served basis, so early sign-up is suggested.
