HUNTINGDON — Sophomores Bobby Colton and Scott Minor teamed up for a two-hitter and Huntingdon exploded for six runs in the fifth inning to beat Clearfield 7-2 in a non-league scholastic baseball game at Blair Field Thursday afternoon.
The Bearcats slugged three home runs, two by Nick Long good for four runs, en route to their third victory in as many days, which doubled their win total for the season.
\”They\’ve had a good week, beating Indian Valley, Lewistown and us after losing a close game against Central Mountain,\” Clearfield coach Sid Lansberry said. \”They were 5-12, the same as us, but you could tell the way they hit the ball they were better than that. They had more close games and scored more runs.\”
The Bisons grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third inning, offsetting Long\’s opposite-field home run to deep right the previous inning.
Derek Danver\’s two-out single chased home Jarrin Campman, who had walked and stolen second. Isaac Butler\’s infield hit and walks to David Welker and Corey Bookhamer pushed Danver around.
However, the Bisons missed a golden opportunity to give pitcher Michael Moyer a big cushion by leaving the bases loaded for the second time.
\”You leave 10 and get only two hits and strike out 11 times, you\’re not going to win,\” Lansberry said.
Moyer held off the Bearcats until the fifth, when they got to him for five hits.
Brett Bayges tied the game with a home run down the left field line. After Jared Donelson and Andy Young came through with run-producing singles, Long launched a three-run homer to deep left center.
\”Moyer wasn\’t pitching badly until the fifth, and then it all happened so quick,\” Lansberry said.
Parker Herrington worked 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Bisons.
Campman stole four bases and is 20-for-20 this year.
Minor held the Bisons hitless and struck out three over the last 2-2/3 innings for the win. Colton, making his first varsity start, had eight strikeouts but gave up seven walks.
Clearfield will close out the regular season with Central Penn League home games against Altoona Monday and DuBois Tuesday.
