ST. MARY’S – Curwensville high school’s baseball team stepped up to meet AAA St. Mary’s Monday afternoon and the step was a bit too high for the Tide.
The Golden Tide did beat the Flying Dutch earlier this season, 2-0, but this time it was much different as Curwensville was beaten on the road, 12-4. The loss snapped a three game winning streak for the Tide who now stand at 11-5 on the 2008 campaign.
The Dutch had three big innings that did in the Tide as they scored four in the first inning, three in the third and four again in the sixth. Curwensville bunched all of their runs in one inning, as they put a four on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. The four runs tied the game at four all until St. Mary’s put those three up in the bottom half of the third and were never threatened again.
St. Mary‘s banged out a total of twelve hits against three Tide hurlers. Mitchell Straub had the big day for the Dutch, as a designated hitter, picking up three hits, all doubles, and four RBI’s. Brett Quiggle and Jon Petrocchi also had three hits each with Quiggle adding a double also.
Curwensville junior, Ben McGary, was the bright spot for the losing Tide, as he singled three times.
Head coach of the Golden Tide, Ryan Briskar, said afterwards, “We didn’t have a lot of bright spots today except for Ben McGary with three hits. Gardner (Sam) also chipped in with a couple of base hits and Jonathan Michaels did well for us. We just need to get ready for Wednesday when we go to Ridgway.
Curwensville beat Ridgway the first time around, 9-8. The rematch, at Ridgway on Wednesday as mentioned, starts at 4:15 pm.
