LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – No. 2 Lock Haven University\’s softball squad made it five in a row today as they defeated No. 16 Kutztown University in Friday\’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament at Lawrence Field.
LHU was victorious by a 5-0 margin as they tagged KU pitcher Katlin Arbogast for five runs off of eight Lady Eagle hits.
After four innings of action it was looking like the matchup could be another 15 inning affair but Lock Haven (42-6) was able to manufacture a run in the top half of the fifth inning as a Brittany Muthard (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) single drove in Erica Eisenbise (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson) to break the deadlock and give The Haven a 1-0 advantage.
An inning later LHU would pad their lead and get an insurance run as an RBI double from Amanda Roosa (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) drove home Sarah Norris (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) to stretch the Lady Eagle lead to 2-0.
Following a three up three down inning from the Golden Bears, LHU drove in an additional three runs as an inside the park homerun by Norris drove in left fielder Julia Popovich (Lemont, Pa./State College) and pinch runner Meredith Morris (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) to push the LHU lead to 5-0.
Kutztown would follow with a 1-2-3 inning to end the ball game as LHU advanced to the championship game with a 5-0 victory.
In the circle, it was Kristin Erb (Reading, Pa./Exeter) tossing another complete game shutout, this time while allowing three hits and striking out six KU batters.
Recording the loss for Kutztown (44-11) was Arbogast who allowed LHU\’s five runs off of eight hits while striking out a trio of Lady Eagle batters.
LHU moves on to tomorrow\’s championship contest with a team to be determined earlier in the day when Bloomsburg and Kutztown do battle in the loser\’s side of the bracket at 11:00 a.m.
Tomorrow\’s championship contest has a scheduled start time of 1:00 p.m.
