Clearfield Fire Department Merger Topic of Discussion at Council Meeting

CLEARFIELD – On Wednesday night the majority of Clearfield Borough Council approves supporting the Clearfield Fire Department merger of the four companies into one department using a one-building concept.

The issue was last discussed at Clearfield Borough Council’s committees meetings last week.

Council member Barry Reddinger asked Fire Chief Brett Owens if all four companies were for the move.

“I would say the bulk of the membership is,” replied Owens.

Reddinger said that he asked the question because the issue was previously brought up the companies through a letter. Reddinger said that council only heard from two companies at the time. He said that he would like to hear from the other two companies before council tries to push this through.

Owens told Reddinger that the discussion was that if the two companies say no, the remaining two will make up the Clearfield Fire Department.

“The other two will be on their own,” said Owens.

“We met with fire department representatives,” said council member Fred Wisor. “This is what they presented to us.”

Reddinger asked if there would need to be an audit done of the companies. Wisor said that he was under the understanding that the fire companies would handle this.

“It seems we’re going backwards,” said Reddinger.

Wisor said that he was impressed with what the representatives had to say.

During the vote Reddinger was the only council member to oppose supporting the merger.
